Profile

Wheeler comes from a family where cricket is given plenty of importance. His grandfather, Ray Dowker, played for Canterbury Wizards, his younger brother Joe Wheeler, plays for Otago Highlanders. Ben, on the other hand, represents Central Districts in the Plunkett Shield. He has also appeared for New Zealand in the U-19 Indoor World Cup and the U-19 World Cup in 2010.

Ben was named in the New Zealand tour squad of England in May 2015. In his first game against Somerset, Wheeler ripped through the County side with a 5-wicket haul. His impressive outing earned him place in the New Zealand ODI side, during the same tour. In his debut ODI, Wheeler ended with figures of 3/63. He had a decent outing after that and was allowed to keep his place for the tour of Zimbabwe.

Wheeler has played only a handful of white-ball games for New Zealand but has been rated highly in the domestic circuits, particularly in T20s where he seems to express himself the most. It's a curious case though if you look at his domestic numbers. While his batting in List A cricket has been decent, his bowling has been better off in First-class games. All in all, he is a fine all-round package, ideally suited for the shorter forms. Can hit the long ball and also bowl cleverly.
