Profile

Hamish has a legacy to live upto, because his father Ken played and captained New Zealand. Considered as a hard hitting left-hander, he started his career by playing the 2008 U-19 World Cup. He showed signs of maturity in the Plunket Shield in 2011/12 where he scored three hundreds and carried that same form in the next season.

In February 2013, he made his debut in a T20I match against England at Auckland. Good form in the shorter formats allowed him to play his first Test against England at Dunedin. He had a fabulous start to his Test career, scoring 171 in his debut innings off just 217 balls against the likes of Anderson, Broad and Co. After that innings he was considered to be the future of New Zealand batting, but things have not gone smoothly as he has failed to reach fifty in the next 11 innings and questions marks have been raised regarding his temperament.

Rutherford had an up and down home series against West Indies and India. He got starts in almost every innings but failed to convert it into a big score. He might be given a long rope since New Zealand won both the series. However, he has been kept out of the ODI team by the returning Guptill who has been consistent in his performances.
