Arshad Ayub - India - Batsman

Arshad Ayub is a former Indian off-spinner who played 13 Tests and 32 ODIs for India. Ayub made his Test debut against the West Indies in Delhi in 1987. He picked up 5 wickets in the game, including four in the second innings as the visitors chased down the target of 276 with 5 wickets in hand.

Ayub's best performance in Tests came in 1988 when New Zealand visited India. His 21 wickets in the series played a crucial role as India won the series 2-1. In the first game in Bangalore, he grabbed 8/104 in the match as India cruised to a win.

He picked up his career-best figures of 5/50 in the second innings of the Mumbai Test. India though lost the game by 136 runs. He was the best bowler on show in the deciding Test as he had New Zealand on the mat with match figures of 7/91. India went on to win the game by 10 wickets.

Against West Indies in 1989, he picked up two 5-wicket hauls in the 4-match series that India lost 3-0. When India traveled to Pakistan in 1989, he failed to pick a wicket across three innings and that was the last we saw of him in the Test team.

However, he continued to play ODIs for another year. His most important contribution in limited overs cricket was against Pakistan in 1988 Asia Cup. In a low-scoring thriller, his picked up 5/21 as Pakistan were bowled out for 142 and India won the game by 4 wickets.

In an international career that lasted 3 years, Ayub picked up 72 wickets (41 in Tests and 31 in ODIs). He started a cricket academy in 1998. He has also been the manager of the Indian national team time and again, including the 2015 ODI World Cup. He is currently the President of Hyderabad Cricket Association.
