Profile

Brian McKechnie is best known for being the batsman who faced Trevor Chappell's controversial underarm delivery at the MCG in 1980-81. Apart from this event, there weren't too many limelight-hogging situations in Brian's international career. A fast-medium bowler who could also bat a bit, he was a limited-overs specialist who plied his trade for Otago in domestic cricket. He was an efficient bowling all-rounder there and had reasonable returns as a pacer in his limited ODI career as well. Brian wasn't the kind of pacer who could run through a batting line-up but was quietly efficient in his duties. Apart from cricket, Brian was a fine rugby player as well. There was an incident when he backed out of a cricket tour of India citing a hand injury and instead went to play rubgy for Southland. His abilities in multiple sports ensured that his sportsman career would be long. In his initial years, he was well involved with cricket but towards the fag end, it was all about rugby. After giving up sports altogether, Brian was a Canterbury selector who also became a part of the national panel later on.
