Franklyn Rose - West Indies - Batsman

Franklyn Rose was another candidate falling into the lengthy category of underachieving West Indian fast bowlers post the all conquering Caribbean era.

The muscular Jamaican created an instant impact, snaring 7-123 (match figures) on his maiden Test appearance versus India at his home ground- Sabina Park. His finest hour though came in 2000 when Rose scripted an unbelievable come-from-behind win for the Windies with his 4-19, which shaded both Walsh and Ambrose. Needing only 99 to seal victory, Zimbabwe, yielding to Rose's swing and pace fell short by 35 runs.

Unfortunately for Rose, such hot streaks were few and far between. As good a talent Rose was, he was a death wish or a gasoline tanker. Whilst he caused the jag around one day, he sprayed it all round the shop the very next day. The selectors gave up on Rose following West Indies's tour of England in 2000.

Rose was a handy batsman, showing signs of compensation for his blow hot-blow cold bowling. Coming in at 9, Rose compiled an iron willed 69, occupying the crease for nearly four hours under the calm counsel of Jimmy Adams, who claimed a ton in that clash with Zimbabwe in 1999-00.

After drifting away from the international scene, Rose played for Chicago Tomatoes in USA's Pro cricket League. Rose's career would have been rosier if he had melded his fiery pace with an icy cool temperament.

Lesser known Facts:
1. Rose was the 6th West Indies to collect a 5-fer on debut.
2. He is currently functioning as the coach of Birkenhead City Cricket Club in New Zealand.
