Andrew Hudson

South Africa

Profile

Andrew Hudson became the first South African to score a hundred on Test debut. The marathon innings of 163 came against a phenomenal West Indian pace attack which included Ambrose, Patterson and Co. at Barbados in 1991-92. The innings lasted for nine hours and is regarded as one of the best knocks played by a South African opening batsman.

Hudson was a kind of batsman who brought his A game when the chips were down. Another one of his best knocks came on a helpful Durban track in 1996 against India. Hudson scored a patient 80 and was the highest scorer in the first innings.

He was a regular member in the Test and ODI side for six years from 1992 to 1998. He continued playing first class cricket till 2001 before hanging up his boots. In May 2010, Hudson was appointed as convenor of selectors and still holds the position.
