Profile

One of the most controversial fast bowlers of his times, Wayne Clark's ability never really got the
appreciation it deserved. It didn't come as a surprise when he was called for chucking during the 1977-78
West Indies tour - he had encountered these doubts right from grade cricket but the dearth of fast
bowling resources saw him getting fast-tracked into the international arena. Of course he was never
called for throwing till that infamous series. That trip to the Caribbean is etched in folklore due to sporadic
allegations of chucking that were levelled against him and Bruce Yardley. It triggered a mass outrage
and the umpire who no balled the latter was removed for the final Test of the series. This added more
fuel to an already blazing topic.

While Clark's playing career was cut short by form woes and throwing controversies, he did enjoy
success during the brief period that he played for Australia. He was also a prominent man in Western
Australia's pace unit till he hung up his boots in 1984-85. After his playing days, Clark took to coaching
and this was a role where he experienced tremendous success. One of his iconic achievements was to
guide Yorkshire to a County Championship title in 2001, a feat that remains special both for him and the
club as that had come after almost three decades. Clark also coached Western Australia and
subsequently, took up offers in television commentary.
