England

Profile

A fine batsman, who was an expert in caressing the ball through covers, Dennis Amiss, figured in 50 Tests and 18 ODIs for England. Amiss was also one of the first batsmen to use a protective helmet. His top Test score, also his best first-class score of 262(563) against West Indies at Kingston in 1973-74, helped his side pull off an unlikely draw when a defeat loomed large. However, he fell apart against the Aussies, which took some sheen of his record.

Amiss was a fluent ODI batsman, scoring 859 runs in 18 ODIs at an average of 47.72. Interestingly, Amiss is the first and one of the only two player(s) in the history of ODI cricket to have scored century on both debut as well as his last match.

His first-class record was nothing short of stellar - 40,000+ runs in a 27-year career.

After retirement from all forms of cricket, Amiss served Warwickshire as Chairman of the Cricket Committee. Later in 1992, he became an ECB selector.
