Derek Randall

England

Profile

A steady batsman, who represented England and Nottinghamshire, Derek Randall is remembered more for his excellent fielding skills. Therefore it comes as a no surprise that he was nick-named 'Arkle' after the racehorse. He manned the cover region, often intercepting drives and pushes with diving or tumbling stops. Randall was a fair batsman, who hit 2470 Test runs to go with 1067 ODI runs. The major cause for concern with his batting was that he threw away fine starts and lacked consistency. He batted in almost all positions right from Number 1 to Number 7. He could have been better off had the team management given him a particular role.

He was a real entertainer and crowd pleaser in county cricket, pulling off antics on the field. Randall also summoned more consistency at the first-class level, compiling close to 30000 first-class runs at an average of 38.14 with a best score of 209 against Middlesex in 1979.

He retired from first-class cricket four years later but later turned out for Suffolk in Minor Counties cricket.
