Profile

A fine wicketkeeper batsman who was known for swift glovework, Jack Richards was a natural athlete, blessed with a tall frame. He was extremely agile behind the sticks and was also capable enough of being a solid middle order batsman. Five years after making his debut at Surrey, he made his ODI debut while his Test entry happened much later. From being an understudy to becoming a vice-captain turned stand-in captain, Richards career was a roller coaster ride. His biggest moment as a player came during the 1986 Ashes series win as he had notched up over 1000 runs in the County circuit that year, culminating in his national call up for the Test side against Australia at home. Edwards remained one of Surrey's most dependable cricketers during his 12-year association that ended on bitter terms. He was released by the county in 1988 and he retired after failing to attract other counties. Richards was only 30 and very much in his prime when he quit cricket.
