A reasonably tight right-handed batsman, James Whitaker spent his entire county career at Leicestershire, scoring close to 25000 runs with first-class and List-A career put together. He played just a lone Test in the 1986-87 Ashes series but had the satisfaction of being a part of the Ashes winning England team.

Whitaker then became the coach and Director of Leicestershire. Later in 2013, he was appointed chairman of selectors for the ECB.
