Gary Stead hails from a strong cricketing family. His father David represented Canterbury in 80 first-class matches while his brother played List-A cricket for the same team. A reasonably solid batsman, Stead was give his Test debut against the touring South African team in 1999. He played 8 more Tests in the year making substantial contributions before being dumped. After retiring from all forms of cricket, Gary Stead took to coaching. He was in-charge of the national women's team before being appointed as Canterbury's head coach in 2012.

Stead's first-class career spanned 14 years, during which he scored 4984 runs with 10 centuries.
