Profile

A tall pace bowler, Iain O'Brien showed signs of developing into a strike bowler but his career met a premature end. Injuries to seniors - Shane Bond, Daryl Tuffey and Chris Martin - paved way for his Test debut in 2005. Struggling to come to terms with the demands of international cricket, O'Brien was dropped from the team soon after. He returned in 2007 and produced some good displays to prove his worth.

He extended his form to the series against Australia, both home and away, and for Wellington. His fortitude came to the fore when he bowled New Zealand to a famous win against Pakistan in December 2009.

A few days later though he retired from international cricket to spend more time with his wife, who lives in Derbyshire. Middlesex then signed him up as their overseas player for 2010.
