A right-arm medium pacer, Izatullah Dawlatzai represented Afghanistan in the 2009 Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers and was their second highest wicket-taker with 11 scalps. He was then a part of the Afghanistan Under-19 cricket team that qualified for the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, for the first time in their history.

Dawlatzai made his first-class debut against Kenya in Nairobi in October 2010. The same month, he made is ODI debut against Kenya in the 2nd ODI which was also his debut List-A match. He took the wickets of Seren Waters and Collins Obuya in his maiden game. Dawlatzai's best ODI figures came in his 4th ODI when he took an impressive 4/38 against Netherlands in a match that Afghanistan won by 5 wickets. He made his T20I debut in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in March 2012 against Netherlands. He put up a splendid performance taking 3 wickets although he was a bit expensive.
