A left-arm paceman, Michael Bates landed himself on the fringes of national selection ever since his impressive displays in the 2002 Under-19 World Cup. However, he had to wait for his maiden New Zeland call up till 2012 He has featured in 2 ODIs and 3 T20Is with only modest success to show for.
He continues to be a key bowler for Auckland at the domestic level.
