Bangladesh acquire the dubious distinction of scoring the highest first innings total in a losing cause. Can they bounce back in Christchurch? They sure do have plenty of positives to work with but sometimes a loss like this, a completely unexpected one, can drain you beyond repair. Do join us for the second Test from Friday. This is Sagar Chawla signing off on behalf of Vineeth Anantharaman and our scorers Sreenivas and Venky. So long!

Tom Latham is Man of the Match

Williamson: A pretty good Test match all round. I think everyone was going to bowl first after looking at the surface. It was damp for a long time. But Bangladesh put us under a lot of pressure. Their bowlers kept us honest for a long period of time. Lot of credit to Tom Latham to get us close to parity. It just came down to the second innings performance. The ball can be hard to pick up here, part of the character of the ground [all those dropped catches]. Main thing was getting those partnerships. When you are chasing a total, you want to be positive. Chasing anything can be tough on Day 5. But chasing 200 or so is very pleasing as a batting unit. You are always looking to get a result, that's why you play the game. To get as close as we did on the first innings was a fantastic effort. Our bowlers have shown their quality. To bounce back after conceding 600 in the first innings was brilliant.

Rahim: Much better. Could have been worse. We let ourselves down in the bowling department probably and could not execute our plans. There were couple of soft dismissals also. Really disappointed after putting up a great show in the first innings. There's an inexperience in the bowling department with a couple of guys making their debuts. Need to create pressure from both ends to get them out. Need to work on that. Very happy for him [Shakib]. He didn't get any double hundred previously. Hopefully the guys who missed out will contribute in the next Test.

Bangladesh must be so heartbroken with this result. After doing most things right for the majority of the match and even scoring a massive 595 in the first innings, they've blown it up on the final day. But that's what Test cricket is about. The dynamic of batting for survival on the fifth day exerts a kind of pressure which is like nothing else. Bangladesh tried to counter it by staying positive, even overtly positive, and it backfired. Take nothing away from New Zealand's bowlers who bowled with a lot of fire and aggression to shake things up. There were also unfortunate injuries to Imrul Kayes and Mushfiqur Rahim which made things a lot harder. Once they were bowled out leaving New Zealand with 217 to chase, the dejection was too overwhelming to overcome.

17:49 Local Time, 04:49 GMT, 10:19 IST: The great news from Bangladesh's point of view is that Mushfiqur Rahim is out on the field, shaking hands, after that devastating blow to the head. That's so great to see. What a superb win for New Zealand though. It was difficult to even conceive this result at one stage considering the nature of the pitch and the prolonged duration of the first innings from both teams. But through sheer relentlessness with the ball, assisted by some panic-stricken batting, the hosts have pulled off a stunning win to take a 1-0 lead.

Mehedi Hasan to Williamson, 1 run, and he hits the winning runs by whipping the flat delivery through mid-wicket. A stunning final day win for New Zealand

Mehedi Hasan to Williamson, FOUR, he gets there. Goes down on one knee and hits the sweep to the long leg boundary. 15th Test century for Williamson. He looked a million bucks in the first innings as well but failed to kick on after the half-century. Doesn't miss out this time

Mehedi pulls out of the delivery to draw huge gasps from the crowd. Great stuff.

Taskin Ahmed to Henry Nicholls, byes, FOUR, well, well. Williamson is again in a situation where he's in a race to get to his hundred before the target runs dry. He had faced a similar dilemma in one of the ODIs too and eventually missed out. A low full toss outside off, Nicholls throws his bat at it. Fails to connect. But the ball scurries through after landing and sneaks away past the keeper
