The sun hasn't risen there yet but entire Bangladesh would have woken up early to witness this historic moment. This has to be their best cricketing achievement! 2021 was a year of the underdogs and 2022 has started off on the same note. A riveting five-day contest and Bangladesh achieved a lot of firsts. First win vs New Zealand in New Zealand in any format; first Test win vs New Zealand; first win against a top-five Test team away from home. They take an unassailable 1-0 lead in the 2-match Test series and gain 12 WTC points. Can they back it up with another impressive performance at the Hagley Oval which is expected to roll out a greener surface? Until the second Test, which begins on Sunday, it's goodbye from Abhinand Raghavendran, Akshay Maanay, Hariprasad Sadanandan, Rishi Roy and Naga.

Mominul Haque | Bangladesh captain: It was teamwork. Everyone was keen to win the match and they put their hand up in all three departments. We won because of the bowlers, both in the first and second innings they were outstanding. They did all the hard work and bowled in the right areas. He (Ebadot) was unbelievable for us. We didn't play well in the last couple of Test matches and it was important to put our legacy to the next level. We have to forget about this win and look forward to the Christchurch Test.

Tom Latham | New Zealand captain: We weren't quite there in all three facets. Bangladesh showed us how to go about things on that wicket. They were able to build partnerships, bowl (tight) at both ends and apply lots of pressure. We couldn't quite do it for long enough. There's only been two Test matches here, the two games have been similar. Probably a little bit slower than what we expected and didn't quite break up as much. We knew what it would be like, unfortunately we couldn't quite do things things for long enough. Looking back at the first innings, the position we were in, if we'd got 450, then it'd have been a different story. Full credit to Bangladesh the way they went about things for all five days and they thoroughly deserved this win. It hurts, we got to turn to Christchurch in a few days' time, hopefully we can take the learnings from this Test match and apply them to what would be a different surface at Hagley. For every individual, it's important that they reflect on how they went about their things and take their learnings from a surface like this and obviously the information from Bangladesh. Focus has got to turn quickly to Hagley and hopefully we can put out a good performance there.

Ebadot Hossain | Player of the Match: We have come here for the last 11 years and not won a game. When we came this time, we set a goal and we said to ourselves we can do it. New Zealand are Test Champions and if we beat them then it will inspire the next generation to do the same. I have been working hard with Ottis Gibson. The conditions are too flat in Bangladesh and we are still learning how to bowl away from home. I am a soldier of Bangladesh and know how to celebrate (after a wicket). My journey from volleyball to cricket is a long story. I am enjoying my cricket.

Taskin Ahmed: It is unbelievable. We have given everything in the last five days and it is a great achievement, our first win outside Asia. We did not think about the result, we just went about the process and gave our 110 percent. It is lovely to have this support here. We have played quite a few games in New Zealand but this is our first win here.

Ebadot Hossain ran riot with pace & reverse swing as NZ lost three wickets without adding a run (136/2 to 136/5) which left them reeling at the end on day four. There was still some hope on the final day for the hosts with Ross Taylor still at the crease but that was extinguished quickly with Ebadot cleaning up the veteran in the very second over. Bangladesh wrapped up the NZ innings swiftly by removing the last five wickets for 22 runs in less than an hour. Rahim hit the winning runs and captain Mominul was at the other end as they ended New Zealand's streaks at home (17 matches unbeaten and 8 successive series wins). Let the party begin!

After restricting NZ to a <350 score, it was a battle of attrition and Bangladesh ended up batting for 176.2 overs - 1058 balls to be precise. They blunted the Southee-Boult new ball threat thrice in the innings. Wagner bowled his heart out and removed the top three Bangladeshi batters but that didn't stop them from taking a first innings lead (a feat achieved by Bangladesh for the first time in an away Test batting second). Joy-Shanto and Mominul-Liton stitched century partnerships to take their team into the lead and Mehidy-Yasir ensured that it was a significant one. Having gained a 130-run lead, the tourists nipped out Latham and Conway cheaply in the second essay but a few errors (dropped catches, missed run-out chances, all reviews burnt) allowed Young and Taylor to build a partnership. However, the game-defining spell came in the final hour of the penultimate day.

Forget a victory, not many expected Bangladesh to even be competitive against the Black Caps in New Zealand. But they out-batted and out-bowled NZ comprehensively to humble the World Test Champions in their own backyard. Opting to field on a not-so-green track, they conceded just one run in the first half-an-hour of the Test. Despite being on the back foot after two sessions due to Conway's hundred, the visitors fought back and ensured that it was even-stevens at the end of day one. Bangladesh never looked back, post that!

13:20 Local Time, 05:50 IST: Rahim pumps the air in delight, yells out a roar and hugs Mominul. The Bangladesh dressing room is cock-a-hoop. Rahim takes a couple of stumps as souvenirs. The players from both teams exchange handshakes and Wagner is seen hugging Ebadot. Excellent scenes here at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui!

Jamieson to Mushfiqur, FOUR, Bangladesh create history. They have beaten the World Test Champions by 8 wickets. Rahim celebrates with a roar and fist pump. The entire team are on the balcony celebrating a famous victory. First win across formats for Bangladesh in New Zealand. And it was fitting that their most experienced batter scored the winning runs. Fraction short and outside off, Rahim cracks the cut square on the off-side and the ball races away to the fence

16.4

Jamieson to Mushfiqur, no run, fuller and around off, Rahim defends solidly and with a straight bat

16.3

Jamieson to Mominul, 1 run, slanted into the left hander, Mominul helps it along the way to fine leg. Just 2 now..

16.2

Jamieson to Mominul, no run, fuller and outside off, Mominul drives towards mid-off and was hesitant about the single, decided against it

Both captains have agreed to extend the session. They will take lunch in 15 minutes if Bangladesh have not got the job done by then

16.1

Jamieson to Mushfiqur, 1 run, short of length angled in, Rahim fends it off the glove and the ball rolls to fine leg

16.1

Jamieson to Mushfiqur, wide, Jamieson is not happy with the call. Full tempter outside off and Rahim thought about it for a while, but decided against it and let it pass. Not sure if that wide enough to be called
