That ends our coverage for this first ODI. These two sides meet again on Saturday in Sydney. Can England claw themselves back or will Australia claim the series? Join us then to find out, bye for now...

Jos Buttler: Not fussed about the result, we wanted to play with a certain character. Dawid Malan was brilliant to take us till there, and with the field we tried different things and everyone responded. Not happy because we needed to take wickets early on. Quick turnaround, we travel tomorrow and then play Saturday. There will be changes. Let's see how the senior guys are feeling then, or there's always a chance to give some others a game and add to that huge talent pool that's served us so well.

Pat Cummins: Fantastic performance, a really team effort. Everyone came here fresh. Ashton Agar came in after a few days, nice to see everyone step up. We've got plenty of Test cricket coming up, to see Smith play like this was really pleasing. He's been putting in a lot of effort in the nets. Pretty pleased with my bowling performance as well.

Dawid Malan, Player of the Match: No idea, usually just really good wickets. The smaller squares help. Tough to miss those two games with all the work you've put in the last few years, but to come back here and prove my fitness with that hundred was exciting. The pitch got better in the second innings, they bowled really well with the new ball. Maybe we were about 30 runs short. I think 50-over cricket is my strongest format, but it is quite tough to get into this team. Hopefully if I can keep performing like this I can make my mark. (On bowling) I was going to come on earlier but didn't fancy myself against Alex Carey with the short boundary.

21:48 Local Time, 11:18 GMT, 16:48 IST: The hangover from the T20I World Cup was fairly evident as Australia cruised through to a comfortable six-wicket victory. The game was won and lost in the powerplay, as England lost wickets while they were batting and the hosts cruised to a superb start, losing their first wicket in the 20th over. England needed a splendid century from Dawid Malan, and a few handy contributions from Jordan and David Willey to get to 287. But with the start that Australia got, it very quickly became clear that the target wasn't going to be enough. Both openers got fifties, with Travis Head picking up that role post Finch's retirement. The opening stand for Australia added 147 runs, as the inexperience of the English bowling attack was found out. After Head's wicket, Smith came out to bat and looked positive with a few tweaks in his batting stance. He and Warner threatened to finish the game much earlier, but the latter fell to a David Willey short ball. The left arm seamer struck again by getting Labuschagne out cheaply, but Smith held the fort from one end. The former Aussie captain ended at 80 not out, with a valuable contribution from Cam Green also aiding the finish with three overs to spare. England will hope for better when a few of their regulars play in the next game in Sydney, let's see what happens then. For now, stick around for the presentations...
