A comprehensive win over the World Champions - what a way to stamp your authority as the new ODI captain. Quinton assessed the pitch rightly and opted to field on a sluggish track. The bowlers (and fielders) did well to restrict the tourists to a modest score. In reply, the hosts hardly broke a sweat to go 1-0 up in the 3-match ODI series. Expect the Englishmen to come back hard. After all, they were trailing 0-1 in the Tests too before wrapping it up with a 3-1 win. How will this pan out? Join us on Friday for the second ODI from Durban. Until then, it's goodbye from Abhinand Raghavendran, Varun Dixit, Pradeep and Sreenivas.

Quinton de Kock | Player of the Match and South Africa captain: It was a good night. Glad to get a win on the board. Feels good to get back to winning ways. This week we had a chat about how to take the one-day team forward. Today was a good start to that. It's always nice to have two spinners. Smuts is an all-round package. Very nice to have options like that. It's only one game (speaking of captaincy), we'll see how it goes in the near future. Hopefully, it keeps on being good for me. I enjoyed it. It kept me in the game specially when things were really tough. The extra bit of responsibility helped me. It was a matter of getting momentum. Running hard between the wickets was the way to go forward and that was the way we went about it. It's time to go have a little celebration.
Eoin Morgan | England captain: We were way off the mark. We were completely outplayed in all departments by South Africa. No excuses, we didn't adapt to the conditions. Every batsmen apart from Woakes and Denly struggled to get on. South Africa bowled well and we couldn't penetrate the partnership between de Kock and Bavuma. It made things very difficult for us. We lost wickets in clusters, myself and Joe at the same time and then we continued to lose wickets. Failure is a huge platform to learn from your mistakes as soon as you can. Two player making their debuts have come in today and have seen what international cricket is like. They will learn from tonight. We need to continue to learn like we have done in the past and identify where exactly we were wrong.
20:25 Local Time, 18:25 GMT, 23:55 IST: A superb all-round performance from the Proteas. Yes, they could have finished it earlier, but they get the desired result and this is the highest successful chase at Newlands. England's bowling in the absence of Wood, Archer, Plunkett and Rashid looked toothless. Chris Woakes managed to nip out Reeza Hendricks early in the innings, but Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma put on a batting clinic. They stitched a 173-run stand for the second wicket with the former playing a calm-and-sensible knock on his first assignment as captain. QdK recorded his 15th ODI ton and he was ably supported by Bavuma who is playing just his third match in the 50-over format. The latter missed his ton by two runs, but he along with his skipper put South Africa in a commanding position. Smuts and van der Dussen, despite taking their time, eventually took their team over the line.
Parkinson to Smuts, FOUR, tossed up delivery on middle and leg, Smuts gets down on one knee and sweeps fiercely through backward square leg. The ball races away to the fence and South Africa win by 7 wickets
Parkinson to Smuts, no run, Smuts punches this leg-break back to the bowler
Parkinson to van der Dussen, 1 run, full again, van der Dussen stays leg-side of the ball to push-drive it to long-off
Parkinson to van der Dussen, no run, slow through the air, pushed to cover

Jordan to van der Dussen, 1 run, full on the pads, clipped through mid-wicket
Jordan to van der Dussen, no run, this length ball keeps a shade low and van der Dussen gets an inside edge onto his pad and the ball rolls towards backward point
Jordan to van der Dussen, FOUR, full ball with width on offer, van der Dussen leans forward and caresses it through extra cover. Neatly done
Jordan to van der Dussen, 2 runs, rib-lined, van der Dussen crouches a tad and swivel-pulls it to deep backward square leg
Jordan to Smuts, 1 run, back of a length delivery, leg-lined, tucked through backward square leg
Jordan to van der Dussen, 1 run, shortish ball, pulled to deep mid-wicket

8-0-43-0
Parkinson to van der Dussen, 3 runs, ah! Parkinson releases the pressure by spilling one down leg, van der Dussen paddles it to fine leg and collects a triple
Parkinson to Smuts, 1 run, jabbed wide of mid-on for a quick single
Parkinson to Smuts, no run, another mini mix-up. Smuts nudges this leg-stump line ball to backward square leg and there's a yes-no situation. van der Dussen had to put in another dive at the non-striker's end to make his ground
Parkinson to Smuts, no run, pushes out this fullish ball to point does Smuts. van der Dussen is halfway down the track and realises that his batting partner is unmoved. Spots it, turns around and makes his ground. The fielder, too, had fumbled
