Sri Lanka just can't put their house in order in ODI cricket. After an embarrassing first-round exit from the Asia Cup, another shocking series for them in the conditions that are tailor-made for their kind of cricket. It seems that losses in the last couple of years have inflicted serious damage on their morale and they have forgotten the art of winning. It's a precarious situation to be in when World Cup is just months away. I don't see them recovering from this mess until a miracle happens. Let's hope some miracle happens for them. On that hopeful note, I, Varun Dixit sign off our coverage on behalf of Pradeep, Abhinand and Sultan.
Eoin Morgan, winning skipper and MoM: I thought today was a scrappy game for us. The wicket was a little tacky. We thought wicket became better when we batted. I thought Sri Lanka posted a competitive score but with the short boundaries here, we were always in the game. We should be more disciplined in our bowling effort. They played our spinners well as the wicket was turning a lot. We did well in the last 10 overs as they could only score 70-odd runs. We always knew the rain would come, and when it comes, it will stay for a long time. I bowled out Moeen and Rashid - two of the best bowlers today - in the middle overs. I am happy with the performance of my seamers. Woakes has been exceptional for us in the powerplay. We are still getting to know Olly Stone and Curran has been incredible for us in the death overs. So every seamer is offering us something different. There is a chance we might experiment in the final match but that will not mean we will not be at our best.
Dinesh Chandimal: We have played some outstanding cricket in this match. We got a good start and then a couple of quick wickets. And after that, the recovery from Shanaka and Perera was really good. Top of the order, Dickwella batted really well. We can take the positives out of it and I am looking forward to the next game. I think we posted a winning score on the board. If weather would have permitted, we could have won the game but we can't control weather. Mistakes are a part of the game but you can't say everytime when you are losing a game, you are doing a mistake. We have to learn from our mistakes and move forward. We are a young unit and we will learn quickly. That no-ball was our mistake. If that wouldn't have been a no-ball, we could have won this game. I brought Malinga in the attack because of the rain threat and I continued bowling Dananjaya as he was bowling well.
England started off superbly courtesy Jason Roy who looked in stellar touch right from the scratch. Chandimal took 9 overs to introduce Akila but when he came on, he delivered the breakthrough on the first ball. England looked unsure against him and he got the better of Roy too in his fourth over. This wicket brought Sri Lanka back in the match but it also united Root and Morgan who put on a match-winning partnership. They went about their business in a professional manner and made sure their side always remain ahead of the DLS par score. Sri Lanka were denied the wicket of Root as only four fielders were inside the circle and that moment would haunt their skipper, Chandimal for the next couple of days at least. A wicket or two in the next five overs could have made things intriguing but rain did not allow that to happen and eventually England won the match and the series. Hang on for the presentations.
16:40 Local Time, 11:10 GMT, 16:40 IST: The inevitable has happened as the game has been called off. The regular unwanted guest in this series, rain arrived late in the day but it was good enough to spoil the party yet again. England win by 18 runs on DLS and take an unassailable lead of 3-0 to clinch this 5-match ODI series with a match to play.
16:15 Local Time: Not an auspicious update, the rain has only got more intense. Chances of getting any further play look bleak.
Ajay: Please mention the PAR score in case another wicket had fallen?----- 127 after 27 overs.
Jatin Chawla: DLS method is like physics for me. I don't understand both!!
15:44 Local Time: It has started to drizzle and the umpires allow the groundsmen to bring in the covers. The DLS par score after 27 overs is 114; England are 18 runs ahead. Chandimal isn't happy. How costly was that error (only four fielders inside the circle) from Sri Lanka, when Root was caught at short fine leg? Post that, the duo of Morgan and Root didn't take any risks and ensured that they were ahead of the par score. The rain has got heavier. If no more play is possible, England will seal the series. We'll keep you updated.
