England were made to work hard in their recent outings against West Indies but not today. On the big stage it was smooth sailing for the hosts. For a change, the rain gods stayed away and England never put their foot off the pedal. For West Indies, the start against Pakistan now seems a little bit of a misnomer as they have not played smart cricket back to back against Australia and England with a rained-out affair sandwiched in between. They need to pull up their socks and we need to usher out as our quilts have started to lure us. This is Kumar Abhisekh Das signing off on behalf of Pradeep Krishnamurthy, Akshay Maanay, Hariprasad Sadanandan, Varun Dikshit and Naga.

Eoin Morgan | England captain: It is my back. It is a bit sore at the moment and hopefully it settles down in the next few days. Roy tweaked his hammy and is a bit stiff. We will see how we pull up in the next 48 hours. I have had a lot of back spasms in the past. It is a matter of 24-48 hours before it settles down, sometimes it gets healed a lot quicker and sometimes it lingers around. Same with Jason's injury. Everybody in our squad is so vital and we don't want any injuries through the tournament but there will inevitably be some. Hopefully there are not too serious. We have had a really good day at the office. We didn't make necessary inroads at the start, the bowlers stuck to plans and they created chances throughout the game. As a whole, we were brilliant. Joe had a good day out. He is such an important part of our team. He is the glue that holds the team together and is an awesome player to watch. He (Archer) is a pleasure to captain. He is not flustered in any situation. I think our plans have remained the same. The personnel have changed little bit and it has been unfortunate to leave a few guys out. Leaving guys out is part and parcel, especially in a tournament like the World Cup. They will play a part at some time and they know that. We have struggled against Afghanistan in the past and won't take them lightly.

Jason Holder | West Indies captain: We didn't have enough runs on the board. We lost wickets at regular intervals and there were a few careless shots as well. If we had just hung around and got a couple of partnerships, we could have gone a bit deeper. The toss was a bit crucial but having said we did well in the powerplay. We lost the game in the middle overs. Our batters needed to take more ownership and form a few more partnerships. We needed to dig in deep and need to correct it. It has happened twice in two games now. We misread the wicket in terms of pace and didn't get the short balls high enough. Were a bit erratic as well. But when you have 213 to defend, you have to look for wickets. We are carrying a few niggles in the dressing room and need to get back fit ahead of the Bangladesh game. We can't control the past and the future is something we can control. We need to tighten up in all three departments.

Root, Man of the Match (100*and 2/27): It is obviously nice to get the ton. It was a very good toss to win for us and it was important for us to take advantage of that. You pride yourself on as a batter for converting those starts into hundreds. It is just nice to get some time in powerplay. It is nice to have the fielders up and find the gap. There is not a massive difference in opening and batting at number 3. I just try to play the situation. It is good to have good players like Jonny, Roy, Morgan, Buttler and even Woakesy, the way he came out today and batted was fantastic. Really good team performance. We prepared indoors two days for the short-pitched stuff. You make sure you prepare for everything. It is nice that the hard work paid off. I have been trying differing skills with my bowling, it is still a work in the progress.

17:12 Local Time, 16:12 GMT, 21:42 IST: Totally outclassed have been the West Indies team. The moment England won the toss, they haven't put a foot wrong. Gayle did give them a threat in his 41-ball 36 which also included a drop by Mark Wood at deep third man. But once Gayle fell prey to the short ball, West Indies kind of nose-dived as well barring the Hetmyer-Pooran partnership. The southpaws built a healthy partnership before Root had Hetmyer caught and bowled off an innocuous offie. Holder and Russell also fell by the wayside playing loose shots. And Archer delivered the final touches by removing the tail. England though on the field had scares in the form of injuries to Roy (hamstring) and Morgan (stiff back). Both of who walked off during the course of the action. That prompted the management to send Root at the top of the order and he responded with a classy ton. The short balls never flustered him and he looked in cruise control throughout the innings. Woakes was asked to bat at 3 and he also made a vital 40 once the Bairstow-Root combo laid the platform.

Holder to Stokes, FOUR, England win! This has been a one team show. They have totally been ruthless today. That was a full ball, Stokes created room and despite the ball cramping him, clipped it past mid-on for a four to complete the formalities

Last ball of the game?

Holder to Stokes, no ball, FOUR, stamps the ball down past cover as it was dropped short. The man at mid-off gave a painful chase but failed to fetch it back. To make matters worse, it was a no-ball

Jason Holder [5.0-0-22-0] is back into the attack

Holder comes into the attack with droppy shoulders. It has been a tough day for his team.

Thomas to Root, no run, tucks the ball off the back foot into the on-side

32.5

Thomas to Stokes, 1 run, crunches the pull away for Allen in the deep to cut it off. One more. Number of runs needed now in single digits

32.4

C

Thomas to Root, 1 run, second ton of the WC. Root has been at his consistent best. He not only has anchored this chase but at the same time has maintained a good strike rate as well. Typical Root knock. That was short again and was pulled down to deep fine leg for a single

32.3

Thomas to Stokes, 1 run, plays the pull fine and gets it down to fine leg for a single. Root back on strike

32.2

Thomas to Stokes, no run, stabs the ball down to gully

32.1

Thomas to Root, 1 run, pulls the ball down and gets it behind square for a single. Root thought of a couple but decided against it. Moves to 99. The crowd wanted Root to take a brace there

Now, Gabriel is walking off the ground.

Mayuresh Matkar: Jason Roy is a very important player for England. But they still can have Vince to open or else stick with Root and get Moeen Ali to play. They still would look a dangerous batting unit.

31.6

Gabriel to Stokes, no run, bangs the ball short outside off and Stokes left it alone

31.6

Gabriel to Stokes, wide, 15th wide of the innings. West Indies have been indisciplined, again. Poor delivery down leg and was wided as Stokes missed the tuck

Gabriel loses his run up at the delivery stride. Seems to be limping a bit. Did he twitch anything?
