What a great result from a neutral's perspective, exactly what the tournament needed. All that bickering about pitches, Sri Lanka found the perfect ally in Headingley today with just enough grip to make England falter. Imagine what damage this could do to the psyche of the hosts, who have now slipped twice against supposedly lesser teams and will play against Australia, India and New Zealand in their remaining matches. The top four doesn't look as unbreachable as it did yesterday, which is a good thing. That's it from us. To many more such twists and turns, this is Sagar Chawla signing off on behalf of Raju Peethala, Varun Dixit, Akshay Maanay, MS Ramakrishnan, Hariprasad Sadanandan and our scorer Venky. Cheers!

Sri Lanka believed today. You could see that. There were at least four captains - Karunaratne, Mathews, Malinga, Kusal Mendis - at a point when Archer and Stokes were batting. It is this kind of spirit, energy that was missing before. This is what Sri Lanka is known for. And they had to do it for Malinga. The man was pleading game after game post-match to get serious about playing for the country. When Mendis dropped Stokes at the end, he was down on his knees. He finished his final over and stood in disbelief at the missed opportunity. Could Mendis have dived further? Will Stokes farm strike and somehow take his side home? Is this potentially the end of a semi-final dream in what is my final world cup? A lot was running through his mind in that one moment. He was desperate today. Started off brilliantly with the ball. Showed the way to his team. Came back in the middle overs and lifted the team. And at the death he used his experience to threaten batsmen. Now he is all smiles. He lives on with the hope of downing South Africa and progressing further. And he does know a thing or two about the Proteas!

Harsha Bhogle: This WC was heading towards many dead rubbers. Today's result has changed that and I am looking at the matches to come through a different lens

Dimuth Karunaratne | Sri Lanka captain: It was a close one. Sometimes we were under pressure and sometimes we were dominating. At the end of the day it was team work - batters, bowlers and fielders. This wicket looked good but when we were batting it was slow. We knew we couldn't get 300, so we wanted to get 250-275 but unfortunately we lost wickets. Angelo batted really well and took responsibility. If we had the score, the bowlers knew what to do on this wicket. When Malinga got a couple wickets we had to keep him for the last overs and then I gave Dhananjaya the ball and he did a good job. Those are the things we want as a team and I am expecting those things as a captain. I think Root's wicket was the turning point. I was not confident (with the review) but still went for it.

Eoin Morgan | England captain: I thought we were really good with the bowl, adapted to the conditions and we restricted Sri Lanka to a chaseable total. Lack of partnerships cost us the game. Couple of individual performances almost took us over the line. It is frustrating in the dressing room. Every game is extremely tough in this tournament, we have talked about this. We will look to bounce back well on Tuesday. Both sides found the conditions challenging. It was a bowler's day. There will be more of those throughout the tournament so we will have to adapt better. It is a tournament where you need to adjust and turn things around. Naturally as a team we tend to come back strongly, that is our strong point. This is a long tournament and we have huge opportunities in every game. We have the chance to bounce back. We have Australia next, it is one of those fixtures which you look first in the fixture list before the start of the tournament. It is always very exciting playing them at the home of cricket. We don't know yet (whether Roy will be fit for the Australia match).

Malinga (Man of the Match): (On the dropped catch of Stokes) We know how good a player he is, we've seen it in T20 cricket and in the IPL. But we kept sticking to our plans, ensured that he played away dots and put pressure on him. It paid off. Our plan was to stick to line and length on this pitch with the slower ones and bouncers. We have the confidence to influence matches and have faith in ourselves.

Harsha Bhogle: Brilliant from Sri Lanka. England showing a soft underbelly in chases? Delighted for Malinga.

18:14 Local Time, 17:14 GMT, 22:44 IST: Come out of your slumber, for there's life in this World Cup yet. Sri Lanka, who have evoked more lament than enthusiasm in this tournament so far, have toppled one of the favourites in quite dramatic fashion, defending a score of 232, which was supposed to be a cakewalk for England following their six-hitting party against Afghanistan. But, despite all their troubles, Sri Lanka found heroes. They found a hero in Lasith Malinga who fought his creaking body to turn back the clock. They found a hero in Dhananjaya de Silva. And finally in Nuwan Pradeep to seal the game off when Ben Stokes was threatening to win it single-handedly with a stunning late charge. Oh, what does this mean for a ridiculed Sri Lankan outfit? And what does this mean for England, who have matches coming up against Australia, India and New Zealand?

Pradeep to Mark Wood, out Caught by Kusal Perera!! Mark Wood has nicked it. He has nicked it. It was a feather, and he immediately looked back at the keeper as an expression of guilt. Heartbreak for Stokes and England. It was a length ball in the channel, Wood prodded forward in defence but was unable to survive the one ball that Stokes had left for him in the over. Sri Lanka pull off a thriller at Headingley. Mark Wood c Kusal Perera b Pradeep 0(4)
