Looking at the pitch in the afternoon, we got to know it's going to be a high-scorer. India did well to recover and post 347, but New Zealand were simply outstanding in the chase. India's bowlers had no clue and the Black Caps used the short boundary to great effect. Talking of short boundaries, there's no respite for the bowlers as we move to Eden Park, an even smaller outfield, for the second game. That one promises to be a run-fest as well. The bowlers have a couple of days time to think of their attack/defence. See you all on Saturday then!
Tom Latham | New Zealand captain: A great performance from the guys. It was nice to keep our composure at the end and get across the line. For us it was about building partnerships. The total was a litte more than what we would have liked to chase. But we managed to get off to a good start and keep wickets in hand. We saw how hard it was to defend with the left-right combination. It's nice to make winning contributions. The way Ross played was fantastic. We weren't quite where we wanted to be with the ball. So we got to improve and hopefully we will play the perfect game at Eden Park.
Virat Kohli | India captain: An oustanding performance by New Zealand. We thought 348 was good enough, especially after the start we got with the ball. I think Tom's innings took the game away from us. Ross and Tom were unstoppable in the middle overs. We were decent in the field, we dropped one chance. We need to improve though. We can't think about that one chance. To bat with a positive frame of mind for about 25 overs after that chance is not a small thing at all. I got to say that the opposition played better than us and deserved to win today. Both new openers gave us a good start, hope they continue to do the same. Shreyas's hundred was outstanding and KL was brilliant with the bat too.
Ross Taylor | Player of the Match: It was nice to get across the line. Restricting them under 350 gave us a chance. We were fortunate with the left-right hand combination and we were able to target the short boundary. Tom came in and took pressure off me. I told the boys that it's like sleeping in your own bed, Southee said why don't you take it around then(smiles, when asked about his good show in Hamilton)! It's been a happy hunting ground for me. Hopefully we can put up a good performance in the next game. It was nice to be there at the end after I got out thrice towards the end in the T20 series.

23:13 Local Time, 10:13 GMT, 15:43 IST: Going down 0-5 in the T20Is at home, coach taking a break, India piling up a massive total... there was a lot of pressure on the Black Caps, but they paced their chase so well to prove why they are highly rated in the 50-over format. Nicholls and Guptill set a nice base at the start, but India came back with two quick wickets. Taylor escaped an early scare when Kuldeep dropped him on 10 and Nicholls, who was already set, took responsibility and shared a fifty partnership. Latham came on, was on 3 off 13 balls but accelerated to 50 off 38 balls to snatch the advantage back from India. Taylor was smartly doing his bit, while Latham was taking on the bowlers. A brisk 138-run stand put this beyond India's reach, but New Zealand did send scary waves by losing 3 wickets for 21 runs. Santner held his nerve with Taylor at the crease and they crossed the line with 11 balls to spare. Thakur had a forgetful night. Kuldeep was taken to the cleaners as well. The Indians bowlers didn't look penetrative and they could give dew as an excuse towards the end because the on air comms did mention about dew setting in.
