PLAYER OF THE MATCH : Navdeep Saini
Batter
Bowler
So that's that from the first of the three T20Is. The teams will be back in less than 24 hours to entertain us, hopefully on a much drier pitch. But the weather is slightly iffy for the pitch to drastically improve in less than a day. On the field, West Indies would want to assess better with the bat and India need to be little more tight with the bat and keep up the good work done with the ball. Rest well and join us for the second T20I, which begins 10:30 local time. Tata!
Virat Kohli | winning captain: The bowling and fielding was right up there. The pitch wasn't great to be honest, but they couldn't have done much with all the rain around and the covers being on for three odd days. They did a good job to get the game started. The bowlers were on top throughout. He (Saini) is from Delhi. He is a raw talent, has raw pace. He is one of them who can bowl 150 clicks and there are hardly any who bowl at that pace and he is fit. He is someone who can build a name for himself and he is hungry as well. Hopefully he builds on from here. We would have liked to chase this four down maximum, that's how this pitch was. It was tough to get your shots away with the old ball. We just want to contribute as a team in the second game.
Man of the Match on T20I debut (India)
D Karthik vs SA Joburg 2006
P Ojha vs Ban Trent Bridge 2009
S Badrinath vs WI PoS 2011
A Patel vs Zim Harare 2015
B Sran vs Zim Harare 2016
N Saini vs WI Lauderhill 2019
Navdeep Saini is the Player of the Match and he sports a beaming smile. Must be a great feeling to get the award on debut.
Carlos Brathwaite | losing captain: We didn't assess the conditions well. Kudos to Polly (Pollard) for leading the team with the bat, showed his experience. 130-140 would have been good on that wicket. We showed great heart to take the game as deep as we did and it shows that we batted ourselves out of the game with out lack of assessment early. We ask the guys to play positive, aggressive cricket as we West Indians instinctively do. The message would be to keep the intent, however you need to assess better and be smarter with shot selection. Sunil's four overs are very important. The pacers did well to set it up as well.
Sunil Narine: It is always good to be back in maroon. Hopefully, I can continue with the performances and keep playing for West Indies. Fitness is near, my finger is not 100% but I am trying to stay as long as I can on the park. In the series, we will see how it goes. We have to start the powerplay well whether we bat first or bowl first and take on from there. We have to go out there and start winning cricket games before the World Cup. Once we play good cricket and hard cricket, the result will take care of itself. No new thing at the moment, I am enjoying my cricket. Hopefully, you will see more runs and more wickets in the future.
13:40 Local Time, 17:40 GMT, 23:10 IST: Not quite a walk in the park for India, but this was almost a no contest from West Indies, who were expected to fire in this format. But the biggest downer has been the pitch. So tacky, not great for the T20 audience. Hope the sun comes out and dries the surface, because the teams will be playing tomorrow on the same 22 yards. So debutant Saini led the bowling charts with 4-1-17-3, Pollard unbelievably missed a full toss to be out on 49, West Indies posted a paltry 98 and in response, India too were jolted early. 32/3 they were when Pant played an outrageous shot first ball. The hosts chipped at the wickets, but they didn't have enough on the board to push India, who were playing with five batsmen and three all-rounders.
K Paul to Washington Sundar, SIX, a great hit to end the game, a six over long-on with a straight-batted loft. Paul bowled this short, Sundar had enough time on the back foot to get into a great position to send the ball over the rope
K Paul to Washington Sundar, no run, low full toss, defended to point. Bump ball but Pooran funnily appeals for a catch

Lovely vintage SS sticker on Sundar's bat.
Brathwaite to Jadeja, 1 run, fullish delivery on the leg stump, Jadeja flicks it to deep square leg

K Paul to Krunal Pandya, out Bowled!! Oh what a brilliant delivery! Good length delivery angling in and then probably just leaving the left-hander. Pandya was completely squared up as he tried to play off the front foot and the ball hit the top of middle stump. Krunal Pandya b K Paul 12(14) [4s-1]
K Paul to Krunal Pandya, THATS OUT!! Bowled!!
