That’s it from us. Ireland were blown away by a clinical all-round performance from Bangladesh today. It is a morale-deflating defeat for them but they need to show character and stick together as a unit. The hosts are looking sharp in all departments and will look to continue the winning momentum. Join us for the 2nd ODI on 20th March. Till then, goodbye and cheers!
Tamim Iqbal: The way we batted was exceptional. Wasn’t the easiest wicket to bat for the first 20 overs. But Shakib was brilliant, Towhid was also impressive. Mushi's innings made the difference, shout out to him. The bowlers also bowled very well under lights. The first 20-25 overs wasn’t that easy to bat on, it was on the slower side. It is good for us to play on sporting tracks and we will do better. (On Mushfiqur's keeping) He has been doing this for the last 17 years. People forget that there will be ups and downs, but he has been amazing. The way Ebadot bowled was very special to see. Special mention to Nasum too, he doesn’t play too many ODIs, but when he does, he bowls really well.
Towhid Hridoy | Player of the Match: (On missing out on a century on debut) A little bit hurt, but I am happy, very good for me from the beginning. I felt good when I batted with Shakib, he inspired me. I was a bit confident. I just tried to execute my plans and it worked.
Andrew Balbirnie: We were not too disappointed at the halfway stage as the wicket was good and the best time was to bat under lights. But we kept losing wickets and didn't get any partnerships. We were a bit out of sync but don't want to use that as an excuse, Bangladesh have been playing a lot of cricket and continued from there. We want to compete and beat teams like these on a regular basis. But the batting was not up to standard but we will do better on Monday.
The asking rate was mounting and it meant that Ireland needed to find the boundaries. Nasum showed his guile and kept the procession going for the tourists, taking a 3-fer in the process. Dockrell was the lone man fighting but Ebadot returned to castle him, bowling out Ireland under 31 overs. Earlier, outstanding knocks from Shakib, Hridoy, and a breezy cameo from Mushfiqur helped Bangladesh to post their highest ever ODI total. The Irish bowlers were off-colour today. The pacers bowled too short and that allowed the opposition batters to get their eye in. The spinners were not on the money either. All in all, a forgettable performance for the visitors. Stick around for the presentations..
21:03 Local Time, 15:03 GMT, 20:33 IST: What a performance from Bangladesh! This is their biggest win in ODIs in terms of runs, as they win by 183 runs. Chasing 339 was always going to be an uphill task for Ireland and they have crumbled under pressure. The surface had some zip on it and the Bangladesh bowlers have exploited the conditions to the optimum. It was a sedate start from the duo of Doheny and Stirling. An expensive over from Shakib looked like it would give the Irish side the much-needed momentum but his experience came to the fore as he got the better of Doheny soon after. Ireland kept on slipping further as they fell like a pack of cards, courtesy some nippy bowling from Ebadot and Taskin.
Ebadot Hossain to Dockrell, out Bowled!! That's it! Full, fast, and accurate! Ebadot picks up a 4-fer, brilliant performance from him. Dockrell backs away to open up the off-side. Swings through the line but is beaten for pace and the ball crashes into the leg stump. Dockrell b Ebadot Hossain 45(47) [4s-6]
