A clinical performance from England just before The Ashes will keep them in a good frame of mind. Their Bazball approach with the bat is working like a charm and they have notched up 11 victories out of 13 under the regime of McCullum and Stokes. Ireland would have gained some good experience by playing England for the second time in Test cricket and that will hold them in good stead for the future. So, that's it from our side. Keep hopping to Cricbuzz as we bring in fascinating cricket action from all around the globe. Till then, goodbye and cheers!
Ben Stokes: (On the condition of his knee) Actually I didn’t pick it up and I landed quite awkwardly on it (after taking the catch of Campher). My weight went on the inside of the knee like I hyper-extended but I bowled this morning, the first time I have bowled since being back from India, so it’s been about 4 weeks actually and I got through that and I was really happy with where I was, so nothing to worry about. (On their preparation ahead of The Ashes) Look, there’s not much you can do really. The new way is sort of you get as ready as possibly you can and whatever you do, you just get yourself in the right frame of mind for the games we have got coming up. This was obviously a great opportunity for us to get back together as a group and we will be doing that again before The Ashes you know, we will get together and spend some quality time together as a group and have some fun together before the big Ashes series starts, so yeah really looking forward to it.
Ollie Pope | Player of the Match: It is always special to come to Lord’s and play in front of a packed house. It is great to get back with the boys this week and we had a lot of fun out there, so it’s nice to contribute as well. I am someone who likes to feel the rhythm of the game, find the tempo, and that’s what I exactly had in County Championships stuff. I think I was playing well, probably not getting quite as many runs as I wanted, so nice to cash in this week, obviously pre Ashes. (On batting at No. 3) Yeah, loving it. You got a great opportunity there to basically set up the innings for your team. (On batting with Duckett) He is such a hard guy to bowl at, so naturally he hits the bowlers off their lengths, hits their best balls for fours, so that helps me get some more bad balls at the other end as well. He batted beautifully as well. (On him being England’s official vice-captain now) I don’t think much has changed to be honest. We kind of go about things the same way, we have got so much experience in the team to call upon so I guess it’s about channelling some opinions to Stoksey so I think that’s probably my main role. (On taking confidence from this game for The Ashes) To get a good run as a team together and for the batters to get a good feel of it and get that tempo of Test cricket again is really important. We got a bit of time together as a team now, we are just gonna get sort of bonding again as we have done before each series so far and the boys are excited for it.
So, the official broadcasters went off air soon after the game finished and didn't show the presentations. We will put the captain quotes later if we get it.
The English batters replied with their typical Bazball approach and dominated the Irish bowlers. A double ton for Pope, a ton for Duckett, and fifties for Crawley and Root propelled England to 524 and they declared with a massive lead of 362. The Irish bowlers did not have any answers to the onslaught and were caught off-guard. Ireland had a mountain to climb and they were reduced to 162/6 due to some incisive English bowling, especially from Josh Tongue. But, Adair and McBrine had other ideas. They batted with intent and stitched a 163-run stand. Potts finally outfoxed Adair with a short one and then Tongue got rid of Fionn Hand to pick up a 5-fer on his Test debut. Ireland moved into the lead against all expectations but it took Crawley only 4 balls to notch up the required 11 runs.
16:39 Local Time, 15:39 GMT, 21:09 IST: A brilliant batting performance from Adair and McBrine in the final innings made England toil hard but they were already way ahead in the game, so it was only a matter of time before the hosts notched up a massive victory. Ireland were put into bat first on an overcast morning and Broad took three quick wickets to dent them. McCollum, Stirling, and Campher chipped in with some runs but the English attack kept taking wickets at regular intervals. As a result, the visitors were bowled out for a paltry total, with Broad finishing with a 5-fer.
Mark Adair to Crawley, FOUR, that's it, a thumping 10-wicket victory for England! A pitched up ball, Crawley drives it past the dive of mid-on to hit the winning runs. Smiles all around in the English camp
Mark Adair to Crawley, FOUR, England just one hit away now! Back of a length and room on offer, Crawley punches it sweetly through cover point to find the fence
Mark Adair to Crawley, no run, pitched up ball around off, Crawley gets ahead and eases it towards mid-off
Mark Adair to Crawley, FOUR, Crawley beings with a boundary! Shortish ball that sits up nicely for him. He gets on top of it and nails the pull through backward square leg to find the fence
Crawley and Duckett are at the crease. Crawley is on strike. Mark Adair will open the attack
16:26 Local Time, 15:26 GMT, 20:56 IST: So, it just took England just eight deliveries after Tea to get the final wicket with McCollum not coming out to bat due to his ankle injury. McBrine gets a huge round of applause from the crowd as he walks back towards the dressing room. Josh Tongue has the ball in his hand and gets a standing ovation at the home of cricket. He bowled incisively on his Test debut, unlucky not to get a wicket in the first innings but he has shown what he is capable of in the final innings, finishing with a 5-fer. So, England just need 11 runs to win...
Broad to Hume, out Bowled!! That's it, so no century for Andy McBrine! Fuller in length, comes in with the natural angle and then straightens to leave Hume clueless. Past the outside edge and rattles the stumps. Hume b Broad 14(33) [4s-3]
