New Zealand were missing 8 first-team members, but they were simply too good for Netherlands. Still, the visitors showed spunk at times and proved they could be competitive against the big boys. The two teams now move to Hamilton for the final two matches of the ODI series. Do join us on 2nd April for the 2nd ODI. For now, cheers and bye..
Pieter Seelaar | Losing captain: Spinners bowled quite well today. I thought we hung in there. Obviously not enough runs but the way we fought was commendable. Quite frustrating. I thought it was a pretty good wicket. If we got around 260 maybe we could have been in the game with three spinners. We couldn't take it deep. Guys were a little bit tentative. Hopefully we can shake it off and be better in Hamilton.
Tom Latham | Winning captain - You always want to win, the energy shown by the guys with the new ball was outstanding, we then got a good start with the bat. I thought Blair (Tickner) was superb, brought great energy with the ball, and I thought the free-flowing nature of Will Young's batting was outstanding, overall a total team performance from the group. The (IPL) absentees gave opportunities to some of the younger members of the squad, but there was still a lot of experience in that line-up.
Will Young | Player of the Match: Awesome way to start the series. First ODI hundred, over the moon. We (himself and Tickner) were roaming out and talking about getting a hundred and a fifer, nearly the perfect day. This is a class side. The team is run unbelievably well. So just about coming and enjoying your cricket. That's what has been happening with a lot of guys who have been given the opportunities. I have played at 3 in one day cricket a lot in my career. Good to go out there and knock the runs off.
20:55 Local Time, 07:55 GMT, 13:25 IST: A comfortable chase in the end for the hosts, but it was always coming after their bowlers had done well to restrict the visitors to a meagyre 202. They lost Martin Guptill early, but Nicholls and Young added 162 for the second wicket to ensure that they didn't slip at any time in the chase. Nicholls fell after his half-century, and Ross Taylor couldn't finish his career at the Bay Oval on a high, dismissed by Michael Rippon, who personally had a great game. So did Seelar, who followed his batting exploits with 10 tidy overs, but the rest of the bowling line-up were simply outclassed. 10 vital points in the World Cup Super League table for New Zealand, who now move to joint 10th with Pakistan, at 40 points. On the other hand, Netherlands stay bottom at 13th, with 25 points, but they'll only be richer by the experience.
Boissevain to Will Young, FOUR, maiden ODI hundred for Young and New Zealand win by 7 wickets - he lifts his arms in delight, removes the helmet and soaks in the appreciation from the crowd, came down the pitch, got close to the ball and then lifted it over mid-off, as clean as a whistle
Boissevain to Will Young, 2 runs, short and spinning away from outside off - punched backward of square on the off-side and Young's back for the second, moves onto 99
Boissevain to Latham, 1 run, flighted delivery on the leg-stump line, worked behind square on the on-side for a single
Philippe Boissevain [3.0-0-28-0] is back into the attack
