Ireland went down, but they went down fighting. A really spirited performance led by Niall O'Brien. But Mitchell Santner's five-for trumped his hundred today. What Ireland would now hope for is to build on this effort and go one step further as both Porterfield and Niall O'Brien emphasized. That's a wrap of our coverage then. Do join us for the next game, which takes place between New Zealand and Bangladesh on Wednesday. Cheers!

Niall O'Brien: Probably me best knock. Disappointing we didn't get over the line. Just needed one more partnership to get us over the line. Scores haven't been coming the last few months and people have been writing me off. Hopefully I carry on from here. As a keeper, your eyes are normally in when you're coming in to bat second. Kevin's hundred in Bangalore was better because we won that game.

Santner: Niall played extremely well. With the wind, I floated some up there and Niall got hold of me. Didn't do too much different in the second spell. Just a bit of change of pace. There was a bit of turn in the pitch. Dockrell bowled pretty well at the start. I was happy there was a little bit there and I could land it. We've played them at home over the summer, they're a pretty good side as well (talking about Bangladesh).

Mitchell Santner is Man of the Match

Latham: We did a really good job to get close to 300. The way Mitch bowled, he bowled beautifully. The pitch did quicken up a little bit. But we adapted beautifully. The guys didn't get frustrated by the partnerships. Obviously nice to rely on a couple of guys. They bowled to their plans. In 50-over cricket you've got to take wickets and we did that. I think it's important we back up again in the next game.

Porterfield: It is a bit of a missed opportunity. Should have gotten a little bit closer. Lost wickets at crucial stages. Credit to Niall. The few games we've played, we've bowled well. 290 is a very chaseable total. Probably just a wicket behind in the chase. We were only a little partnership away. Last three games, we've moving forward each game.

In that attempt he went after Santner and paid the price. But still take nothing away from the innings - it was a beauty. Special mention to Kuggeleijn as well. He took the key wicket of Wilson and broke the stand which brought his side back into the game. Is very nippy and took the opening two wickets as well. A debut he can be very happy with. Ireland too can hold their heads high - with a bit more experience, they could've won this. Stay tuned for the presentations...

NZ will be a relieved lot. Ireland were on course for a stunning win when Niall O'Brien and Wilson were in the middle but that fantastic spell of 4-0-7-4 from Santner turned things turned dramatically. Santner was outstanding as he repeatedly tossed the ball above the eyeline of the batsman and never resorted to flat darts. Even when he was being hit, he came back with clever variations of pace and used his angles and trajectory superbly. Dan Vettori who is with RCB in the IPL as their head coach would be a proud man - he was a master of such spells and was the best left-arm spinner for a long while. Now his apprentice is filling his shoes and doing a mighty fine job at it. Before that spell, NZ were in real danger of being upset by Ireland as Niall O'Brien played a special knock. But there was no support from his mates as they deserted him and he had no choice but to win it on his own.

Rance to Chase, out Lbw!! End of the game. And NZ escape out of jail. Low full toss, tailing back in a tad, beats the flick and hits Chase on the pad in front of leg. Llong raises the finger in a flash and that's that. Chase lbw b Rance 1(2)

Santner to Barry McCarthy, out Caught by Latham!! Five for Santner. He has single-handedly turned this around. Lures another batsman with his tempting flight and the dip on the ball ensures the top edge on the sweep. Ronchi called for Latham to take it and the captain runs to his right at mid-wicket and takes it. Barry McCarthy c Latham b Santner 6(13)

Santner to Niall O'Brien, out Stumped!! Santner has done it. Beautiful bowling. Slowed it up down and beat Niall O'Brien as he came down the track, the ball went through the flick attempted and Ronchi did the rest. Niall O'Brien walks off to a standing ovation. Deserves every bit that he is getting from everyone out there. Pity that he fell when his side had hopes of him fashioning their first ever win over NZ.
