So we have a series on our hands here, and India will have no more room for error. One more slip-up, and they're done. Sets up the game at Pune wonderfully. Join us for it. That's all from us. It's a goodbye from Sagar Chawla, Srivathsa, Hari Prasad, Akshay Maanay, Vineet Anantharaman and our scorer Venky.
Stats roundup by our man, Deepu Narayanan
+ First home loss for India after batting first. Last came against Windies in Vizag in Nov 2013. Also, the first instance of India losing a home ODI after Kohli scoring a 100.
+ 281 is the highest target successfully chased by NZ against India. It is also the highest chased down by any team at the Wankhede.
+ 200-run stand b/w Taylor & Latham is the highest for any wkt for NZ against India in ODIs. It is also their highest 4th wkt stand in ODI cricket.
+ Tom Latham became the first NZ wicketkeeper to score a century against India in ODIs. Previous highest was 96 by Adam Parore, Vadodara, 1994
Latham: It was pretty humid out there. Keeping for 50 overs and then batting is pretty tough. Conditions back home are pretty different, so nice to see it through. Whatever suits the team, and at the moment that No. 5 position is up for grabs. It's something I've been working on - the reverse sweep. Nice that it came off today. The biggest thing is communication, and we were talking regularly between overs. Ross had a calming influence as a senior player.
Tom Latham is Man of the Match
Harsha Bhogle: Outstanding partnership between Taylor and Latham made a challenging total look easy.
Williamson, winning captain: Brilliant performance. The way we set the tone with the new ball was outstanding. We stuck it out well throughout that innings. Great hundred from Virat, becoming fairly normal. And then to see a partnership like that.. one of the best chases I've seen during my time in the Black Caps. The bowling performance in this humidity was a great effort and the lads stuck to the task. The way Tom and Ross controlled the innings was superb. 200-run partnership was a special, special partnership. You want to take the game deep over here. There were still a few more batsmen in the shed. A great team performance today. Very challenging weather. Have been here for close to two weeks now. Guys had a great attitude, stuck to the task well.
Kohli, losing captain: On a personal note, the knock was pretty satisfying purely because of the fact that NZ put us under pressure initially. 275+ was good on that wicket, but NZ batted really well in the second half. Ross and Tom were outstanding, they deserved to win today. When you get a 200-run partnership in ODI cricket, more often than not you end up on the winning side. Putting the dew into perspective in the last 13-14 overs, we were definitely about 30-40 runs short. In the second half, the wicket settled down nicely. Would have liked to have a better batting performance. However, from where we were, 280 was a competitive score, and we got three wickets as well. But they closed the doors on us. They tackled our spinners really well. They picked their areas. Credit to them. Tom especially. Enjoyed watching him. Not many games in international cricket but he showed a lot of character. Trent also bowled really well. The wicket had enough bounce and turn. If the game had drifted away from us earlier, we could have brought Kedar in. But Hardik did a pretty good job for us, and we didn't feel the need.
Taylor: Take the win anytime. The way Kohli anchored the innings, it put us under pressure. 280 was always going to be a tough score. Latham batted through and took the pressure off me. We were just trying to take it deep. It is very hard to start an innings here and we had to give ourselves a chance. Fantastic. The way they (Chahal and Kuldeep) controlled it and spun it both ways, having a left and right-hand combination helped us. There is a big future for both of them. Fantastic innings from Latham. He has been batting at the top. To come out and bat after keeping for 50 overs, it will go down as one of his best innings. I have played here in India and it is always nice when the crowd is shouting your name, disappointed to not get the hundred but happy with the win.
Tom Latham has enjoyed whatever ODI cricket he's played in India, and today's innings was a really good demonstration as to what has made him successful here. His execution of the sweep shot put India's wrist-spinners off their lengths, and opened other avenues to score as well. A richly deserved hundred, trumping the one from Kohli earlier in the day, which was a magnificent innings as well. Stay tuned for the presentations.
21:34 Local Time, 16:04 GMT, 21:34 IST: If you weren't very excited going into this series, you should be now. New Zealand have created history at the Wankhede, largely without breaking a sweat (I say that metaphorically). They've done it through two extraordinary batting performances. When Tom Latham and Ross Taylor came together, the scenario was looking pretty grim for the visitors after losing three wickets in pretty much no time. But they didn't let the situation get to them. They rotated strike early, never allowed the spinners to dominate, and got the boundaries at timely intervals. India knew they were just one wicket away from getting into the inexperienced lower-order, but that wicket never came, not until the match was almost done.

Bhuvneshwar to Henry Nicholls, FOUR, good length just outside off, heaved away to the boundary. New Zealand stun India to bring up the highest successful run-chase at the Wankhede
Henry Nicholls, left handed bat, comes to the crease
Bhuvneshwar to Ross Taylor, out Caught by Chahal!! Ah, these anti-climaxes! Taylor has slapped this straight to Chahal at extra-cover, who takes a really good low catch. Nevertheless, a fine knock from the veteran player. But alas, he misses out on what would have been his first ODI ton in India. Ross Taylor c Chahal b Bhuvneshwar 95(100) [4s-8]
Bhuvneshwar to Ross Taylor, THATS OUT!! Caught!!
Bhuvneshwar to Ross Taylor, no run, yorker length outside off, sliced to backward point
Bhuvneshwar to Latham, 1 run, right, here's the single as Latham slaps it to sweeper cover. Even the crowd wakes up. Even they want Taylor to get there
Bhuvneshwar to Latham, no run, slower ball around off, pushed to cover
Bhuvneshwar to Latham, no run, short of length just outside off, stabbed to point
So just 2 left now. The only way Taylor is getting a ton is if Latham takes a single here, and then he clears the ropes

9-0-56-1
Bumrah to Latham, 1 run, pitched up outside off, driven to deep point. They take the single
Bumrah to Ross Taylor, leg byes, 1 run, Taylor has swung right across one, only to be hit on the pad. There was no appeal from Bumrah; instead, there was a demand. He seemed flabbergasted at the decision and signalled the T himself. Kohli obliges too. So here we are.. it's a really close call on Bumrah's front foot, but there might just be some part behind the line. No bat involved. The angle though seems to be taking it down leg. Umpire's call, it is, with the ball only clipping leg-stump. Taylor survives, but the prospects of his ton dwindle
