The second ODI is at Saxton Oval, Nelson on Tuesday (January 9). Do join us for that. For now, fill yourself with more cricket from the Southern Hemisphere. Ashes and Freedom Series. Take care, ta-ta!

Sarfraz - captain, Pakistan: "Very tough conditions for us. Credit to New Zealand batsmen; Williamson batted very well. We'll sit together and do better in the next game. It's a setback for us, especially after losing 2 wickets in the first over."

Williamson - Player of the Match | captain, NZ: "It's nice to be on the right side of the result. It was great to get one today against a strong Pakistan side. It was important to start well in the series. Guptill and Munro set the tone at the top of the order. We had a good first half and the way these guys came and attacked, picking those key wickets was brilliant. Pakistan are different from Windies, and it's important to adapt to that. I think we did that well today. It was a very good surface but at the same time, when we are up against Pakistan (we have to be at our best). They won the Champions Trophy on very similar surfaces."

18:38 Local Time, 05:38 GMT, 11:08 IST: That's the end. New Zealand win by 61 runs (DLS), snapping Pakistan's nine-match winning streak. With that persistent drizzle adamant on getting only heavier, this was on. Pakistan lost many wickets in a cluster early in the chase and that after conceding the highest ever ODI score at Wellington, thanks to Williamson's 10th ODI century. Wasn't going to be easy, was it, with rain or no rain around. It can be said that except their brief period of recovery post Munro onslaught and Zaman's delicious innings later, Pakistan don't have much to take away from the game.

Shoaib Akhtar on Twitter reckons that Pakistan's batting is going to suffer on seaming tracks because of poor batting techniques. But he's impressed by Fakhar Zaman, who according to him is an example of how one can do well even with an average technique if one bats intelligently.

18:09 Local Time, 05:09 GMT, 10:39 IST: Okay, this isn't looking any encouraging. Bigger covers have been brought onto the ground. You know what that means, right? That the game will start. Also, Santa is real.

17:54 Local Time, 04:54 GMT, 10:24 IST: So the covers were coming off, with a 18:00 Local Time restart planned, but then the rain returned. So we'll wait. More.

17:36 Local Time, 04:36 GMT, 10:06 IST: It's starting to come down now. You can see the crowd taking shelter and out come the covers. Showers were always predicted for today's game and they've arrived indeed. The DLS par score is 227, so Pakistan are a long way behind. We'll keep you updated.
