South Africa might have an enviable pace attack but it will count for nothing if their batters can't put runs on the board. This is their fourth successive defeat and with each loss qualifying for the WTC final keeps getting further away. They still have a Test on this tour and there is a chance to salvage something. Australia have beaten South Africa at home after 17 years and that needs celebrating. They might be without some of the regulars for the Sydney Test but expect them to go for the whitewash. That's all from us. Hope you enjoyed our coverage. Until next time, stay safe and have a happy new year. Goodbye!
Pat Cummins | Australia captain: It (the win) is right up there. We have had some great contests with South Africa, hadn't won against them at home in 20 years I think, so pretty special. I thought how Warner and Smith batted in the heat was pretty gutsy. Starc and Green as well, put their injuries behind and turned up. Davey was superb, you could see his energy from ball one and to do it in his 100th Test is awesome. He (Carey) has really cemented his place in the Test side and to get a hundred in a Boxing Day Test is special. He's (Lyon) good to go, just winded himself. Starc and Green will definitely miss the Sydney Test. Boxing Day is a pretty huge event and this year was even more special as we celebrated Warnie.
Dean Elgar | South Africa captain: It is not easy at the moment. That was bit of a hammering. We have got to do lot of reflection going ahead once again. There are a few positives coming out of this Test but not a lot. The inexperience with the bat in hand, we lost a lot of batters in the last few years and that has played a role. But that also gave an opportunity for the newcomers to come out, perform and stake a permanent claim in this batting group. But it is definitely hurting us at the moment. There's lot to play for (in Sydney), South Africa are a proud cricketing nation and 2-1 sounds a lot better than 3-0.
David Warner | Player of the Match: Phenomenal achievement from the boys to get the job done. We saw some crazy stuff from Green and Starc, also a fantastic hundred by Carey. 100th Test in front of a packed MCG, what a match it turned out to be. The knock will be right up there for me. I always knew I have it in me to perform on the big stage. (Asked if this was his final Boxing Day Test) I'm committed to playing next year's World Cup (50-over tournament in India), I will keep myself fit, try and keep scoring, but if they do (the team management) tap me on the back and say it's time, I'm ready (to quit)
Mitchell Starc - It was a big game this week, we do pride ourselves in our performances over the last 18-24 months, another big win for us. Nice to get through with the injury and contribute to the win. I wasn't exactly sure (on his finger injury), just wanted to know if I could bowl through the pain, I'll be out of action for a few weeks, but it was worth it. I will have to see what the issue is, what the damages are. Obviously I want to come back as soon as possible with the India tour coming up. Having gone through a lot with all the outside noise and then to deliver in such fashion, he (on David Warner) and Alex Carey set up the game for us. Winning the toss and bowling, it was nice to not to bowl under 38 degrees. We put them under pressure and it was great to set-up this win.
The day started with Erwee and Theunis de Bruyn keeping the Australian pacers at bay. They were batting without much trouble but one searing yorker from Starc broke the partnership and they lost three wickets in succession. Bavuma and Verreynne started the rebuild work again and the pair added a 50+ stand for the fifth wicket, but as usual one good delivery from Boland and that association was nipped in the bud as well. Bavuma got to a fifty but along the way sacrificed two partners and himself threw it away playing a slog sweep. The rest was easy as the tail were not ready to battle it out and wanted to get it over with by playing their shots. All the Australian bowlers picked a wicket and Lyon was the standout with a 3-fer. Hang around for the presentations..
15:25 Local Time, 04:25 GMT, 09:55 IST: South Africa needed a miracle to level the series but at least they could have shown a little more fight, taken it session by session and dragged the game to day five, instead they surrendered meekly in just over two sessions. It was the same script that has been playing for the last four Tests they have played; batters getting themselves in and then just didn't show enough application to convert it into a big score. If not for the last pair throwing their bats around it would have been eight consecutive innings where South Africa wouldn't have touched 200. Credit to Australia though, they lost Green to a finger injury and Starc too was bowling with a fractured finger but they managed to get the job done.
Smith to Ngidi, out Bowled!! Australia win by an innings and 182 runs. They take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. In a Test that has been dedicated to the late Shane Warne, fittingly it is a legspinner finishing the game and it was a ripper of a ball too. Smith tosses it up, lands it outside leg and invites Ngidi to play the big heave across the line, the ball dips and spins across to crash into the top of off-stump. Warnie would have been proud of that ball. Ngidi b Smith 19(21) [4s-2 6s-1]
Smith to Ngidi, THATS OUT!! Bowled!!
Smith to Ngidi, no run, flighted on off-stump, Ngidi prods forward and blocks it back down the pitch
Smith to Nortje, 1 run, tossed up around off, Nortje reverse sweeps past a diving Warner and picks up a single
Smith to Nortje, no run, dropped! Flatter delivery and Nortje makes room to cut, he plays it from off-stump and Warner was wrongfooted at slip, he was moving to his right but the ball comes to his left and at a rapid pace, he gets his hands but cannot hold on
Smith to Ngidi, 1 run, floated up outside off, Ngidi drives it down to long-off
Steven Smith [2.0-0-7-0] is back into the attack

Lyon to Nortje, no run, comes down the track and pushes it off the inner half to mid-wicket, quickly gets back in
Lyon to Nortje, no run, another reverse sweep that Nortje really middles but does not place, straight to backward point
Lyon to Ngidi, 1 run, floated up and Ngidi slogs it to deep mid-wicket, Starc tidies up and it is only a single
Lyon to Ngidi, FOUR, 200 up for South Africa. First time in eight innings they have reached that. Flighted and Ngidi swings it with the spin to cow corner - splits deep mid-wicket and long-on perfectly
Lyon to Ngidi, no run, tossed up close to off, Ngidi prods forward and defends it back
