Three days and we will be back again with the last Test. Wade through the week till then. Abhishek Chaudhary bids bye along with Pratyush Sinha, Raju Peethala and Siva.
Bharath Ramaraj: "Roland-Jones isn't flashy. Not express but sharp. Extracts bounce and will invariably hits the seam in that zone outside off."
Test cricket does not fail to surprise, if not with its action then surely at the presentation ceremony. I thought Toby Roland-Jones deserved the Man of the Match. But Stokes was no less with the kind of batting he did on this track on the first two days. Needed some skill to stave off the pacers in overcast conditions. Joe Root will be happy to have started his Test captaincy career on such a positive note. There are a lot of questions for du Plessis to sort though.
Ben Stokes: It was hard to bat early on. It was difficult, especially with Vernon Philander. It is pleasing when you get through those hard times and then get some runs. I always try and play my cricket in the same way. Look to be positive. I asked Joe if it was sliding down, there were two sounds as well (on Moeen Ali's hat-trick wicket). Credit to Elgar as well the way he played. The last spell I bowled at Trent Bridge was a confidence booster. We start again on Friday, we will want to do the same (repeat the performance).
Ben Stokes is the Man of the Match. Who else is surprised?
Joe Root: It's been a great week for us. What a way to celebrate hundredth Test on this ground. We got the tempo and scored runs in the first innings. Very crucial, in these conditions we could have been easily 4-5 down. But the way he (Cook) played, it was exceptional. We don't make excuses, we are always looking to improve. Dawid (Malan) would have liked to score a few more runs but that can happen in Test cricket. It's great to see him (Roland-Jones) come in and take to Test cricket like duck to water. I think it is important to look at the wickets and make decisions (regarding team selections)
Faf du Plessis: I think that someone like Vernon missing in the first innings was unfortunate. Credit to the English team for getting 350 here. Vernon is one of our world class performers and we take him at almost 50 percent. We knew he was going to be sick but we took him in and thought, we will give him a day. He consistently lands in good areas and we missed him in the first innings. If there was an option we would have taken it (on playing second and third Tests back to back). As I said it would have been nice to play the next Test without that break after the second Test. That second day's evening was probably the hardest of conditions that you face in Test cricket, but you have to fight through it. It has been an extreme series. But hopefully we will come good. The mistakes in the first Test and the third Tests have been obvious. Our batters can learn from Elgar. We came out today and the guys fought really well. As Test batsmen, we have to score hundreds. Amazing knock from Dean today, showed us what we needed to do here.
Complete dominance from England. They have ticked all the boxes but expect South Africa to come hard - like they did in the last match. We will have the presentations in a while.
** Moeen Ali's hat-trick is the first for an English spinner since Tom Goddard against South Africa in 1938
Roland-Jones is not going with a 10-fer today but struck the first blow today. Showed that fast bowlers can review well, not in the heat of the moment but rather sensibly. Morris ensured a bitter lunch for himself and then in the final session, Moeen Ali jumped on the last slice of history.
Today Root just needed six wickets to avoid an embarrassing press conference. His bowlers ensured that the new leader does not have to go through such a day so early in his captaincy days. That's not to suggest it will never happen again. It will for sure but not tonight. He was a bit defensive yesterday when took his own time to declare but that was also a signal that he had immense faith in his bowlers.
14:28 Local Time, 13:28 GMT, 18:58 IST: Things that this Test will be remembered for: Moeen Ali cannot be discounted on a 5th day pitch. Elgar can hold his own. du Plessis can fail to block. England still has homegrown talent that can rip through batting line-ups.
England win by 239 runs, go 2-1 up in the series and ensure that they will retain the trophy
Moeen Ali to Morne Morkel, out Lbw!! It's been reviewed. LBW appeal, not given. Fair delivery, no bat. Moeen Ali's heartbeat... hold on. It's calm now. He has got the hat-trick. First hat-trick for an England spinner since 1938-39. Was a quicker full ball. Morne Morkel planted his front foot across and missed the line. Was rapped low but the umpire did not oblige. Had to when it was sent upstairs. Three reds. Morne Morkel lbw b Moeen Ali 0(1)
