Maybe they can use these extra two and half days of break for some serious introspection and come back fresh and strong for the next Test here at the same venue on what appeared to be a slightly browner pitch (for the moment) than the one rolled out for this Test. They did bounce back aganist India after losing the first Test. They do have the arsenal to ensure their proud record of being the only team in the world to have not lost a series on New Zealand soil stays. We will see you again on Friday. Take care!
It's not so easy for touring sides these days with all the Covid restrictions, lack of practice matches and time lost due to quarantines. But South Africa will look back and say they could have played better shots in the first innings to make more than just 95. The bowling was the biggest let down. Even today the pitch is helpful, but they weren't penetrative enough and the control was all over the place. For the quality in the tank, no way they should have let New Zealand score more than 250 without Williamson. And in the second effort with the bat, the pitch definitely eased out but the batters again just couldn't handle the consistency of the New Zealand pacers.
Southee: It's not in South Africa's nature to roll over, had some work ahead of us. Just a clinical three days from everyone. Different guys stepping up at different times. It's the way we want to play, and we have played in New Zealand for a long time. When you play for long enough, you tick off a few milestones along the way. To be in the some conversation with Sir Richard is a special moment. We know they'll bounce back but we'll sit back and enjoy this.
13:33 Local Time, 00:33 GMT, 06:03 IST: What a dominant show from New Zealand. They are absolutely happy with the manner in which they have won this game. 387-run first innings deficit was always going to be a huge ask. With the way Matt Henry and the rest of the New Zealand bowlers were bowling, it turned out to be an impossible task. Henry bowled a brute of a ball to knock over RVD second ball of the day. Bavuma was hanging on to one end but his teammates came and departed in quick succession. If it was Henry in the first innings, it was the swing and seam of Southee in the second innings that rattled South Africa and Southee eventually went on to overtake Sir Richard Hadlee for the record of most number of Test wickets on New Zealand soil - 202 wickets.
Southee to Glenton Stuurman, out Lbw!! Good review from New Zealand. Tim Southee bags his 14th Test five-wicket haul. Good length delivery nipping back in, Stuurman looks to defend plays outside the line, the ball beats the inside edge and hits the back leg. Impact in line with middle, ball-tracker says hitting top of leg stump. New Zealand complete a massive win. Glenton Stuurman lbw b Southee 11(30) [4s-2]
Southee to Glenton Stuurman, THATS OUT!! Lbw!!
Appeal for LBW, not given. Is it going down? Reluctant review from Latham. Oh that looks closer on the replay. How about height? Three reds! End of the Test match!
