Australia won by an innings and 40 runs
PLAYER OF THE MATCH : Pat Cummins

Just three weeks back Australia had lost their first series to India at home and plenty was being said about this side. But they have turned it around albeit against a weak Sri Lankan side. Plenty of positives to take away; Labuschagne and Head's partnership, Richardson's impressive debut and the way most batsmen applied themselves. Starc's form might be a worry but it won't concern them until they reach Canberra. The hosts will celebrate Australia Day with a good Test victory. That's all from us. Hope you enjoyed our coverage and thanks for sending in your opinions which made it more fun. This is Akshay Maanay signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Abhinand Raghavendran and scorer Siva. Goodbye!
Jhye Richardson: It all happened really quickly. Didn't get much sleep much on the first night, happy to put up that effort. The guys performed outstandingly. The support was there all the way. Couldn't have asked for anything better. Just the patience, being able to use subtle variations and able to watch him (Cummins) bowl from the other end, I just tried to create pressure along with him; it was perfect. He (Paine) just said, if we continue to put performances like that, we can beat anyone in the world. We are all really excited. (On Patterson's catch) Outstanding catch, that was unbelievable.
Sri Lanka getting bowled out for less than 150 in each innings of a Test:
109 & 101 vs Pak, Kandy, 1986
91 & 119 vs Eng, Leeds. 2016
144 & 139 vs Aus, Gabba, 2019
The visitors batted for 107.3 overs in the game and you don't win Test matches batting for four sessions. It was a collective failure from the Sri Lankan batsmen. Only Dickwella showed grit and determination in both the innings. Thirimanne was good in the second essay but the rest were just poor. Things only get worse for them as Kumara has been ruled out of the series and Chameera did not look a 100 percent which leaves Lakmal as the lone fit pacer going forward. They will need to draw inspiration from somewhere and the likes of Chandimal and Karunaratne will be crucial. Let's see how they turn up at Canberra.
17:05 Local Time: Sri Lanka have capitulated within two sessions on day 3. They started the day being one down but it all went haywire soon. Chandimal and Mendis were sent packing in Cummins' successive overs. Silva was the next victim of Australia's newly appointed co-vice captain. During all this Thirimanne blocked one end up and found no support from the other as they all kept falling to either good balls or bad shot selections. Richardson added two more to his three in the first innings, but it was the Cummins show today. He was on the money from ball one and picked up a wicket whenever called upon. In the end he recorded his career best figures - 10 for 62.
Lyon to Lakmal, out Stumped!! All over. Kumara is not coming out to bat. He's injured his hammy. Australia win by an innings and 40 runs. Lovely bit of bowling from Lyon. Tosses it up and draws Lakmal out of the crease, the tailender in him can't control himself as he charges out seeing the flight and is done in by the dip, the ball spins past the inside edge and a delighted Paine whips the bails off in a flash. Handshakes all round before Australia form a huddle. Paine has a word with them and off they march out. Lakmal st Paine b Lyon 24(30) [4s-3]
Lyon to Lakmal, THATS OUT!! Stumped!!
Lyon to Lakmal, no run, flatter delivery, Lakmal hangs back and defends it down the wicket
Lyon to Lakmal, 2 runs, drops it short and Lakmal pulls to deep mid-wicket, Burns keeps it to a brace
Lyon to Lakmal, no run, "catch" shouted Paine. But Marnus does not get there. Not sure Lakmal got bat on that. He was beaten by the turn and the ball lobs off the pad, Marnus runs to his left and dives, but does not even get a finger
Slip, leg slip and short leg
Lyon to Lakmal, no run, comes down the track and inside halves the block onto the pad, the ball drops well wide of short leg
Nathan Lyon [8.0-3-15-0] is back into the attack

Starc
14-1-56-0
Starc to Lakmal, 1 run, short of length on off, Lakmal moves away and chops it into the off-side, retains strike
Starc to Lakmal, no run, cramps him up by following Lakmal with a short delivery, the mistimed pull drops well in front of mid-on
Back over the wicket
Starc to Lakmal, FOUR, thumped! Full and on off-stump, Lakmal makes room and smashes the drive uppishly past the straightish mid-off fielder. He does not even bother to run and stands there to admire the shot
Starc to Lakmal, no run, he's now swinging at everything. Full and just outside off, Lakmal clears his front leg and swings wildly. But the pace of Starc is just too good and he makes no contact
Starc to Lakmal, FOUR, Starc won't be liking this. Short and outside off, Lakmal backs away a bit and free his arms with a slap square of the wicket, the pace of Starc took care of the rest
Starc to Lakmal, no run, yorker aimed for the base of off-stump, Lakmal digs it out into the off-side
