It has been a mismatch since the start of the tour for Sri Lanka but it became worse since the dismissal of three key batsmen due to the bio-bubble breach. They lacked experience with the bat and apart from Kusal Perera and Hasaranga there were no contributions. But they will try and look at the positives and by far it has been the bowling with Chameera leading the pack and it will be up to him and his mates to make something out of the remaining two games. England are also without some of the regulars but they have enough firepower to cleansweep this series as well. That's all we have for you today. Join us for the second ODI on Thursday. This is Akshay Maanay signing off on behalf of Pradeep Krishnamurthy, Abhinand Raghavendran and our scorer Naga. Goodbye!
Chris Woakes | Player of the Match: You are always worried about your bowling figures as a bowler. You have to assess the conditions and adapt quickly as an opening bowler. It is all about not giving freebies in one-day cricket, the new ball travels quickly once it is in the gap. (The rhythm) Not too bad. In the first couple of overs I bowled too short, but then adapted quickly and bowled fuller.
Eoin Morgan | England captain: Delighted. The way the guys started and persisted throughout was really good to see. They kept creating chances right through and full credit to them (bowlers). We have our lead bowlers at mid-on or mid-off and they communicate with whoever is bowling which is the key. He (Root) is one of the best in the world in most situations, he showed us today that if you do the basics right it is easy to score. There are a lot of people (in contention for the T20 WC), you can't rule Root out. The schedule has not allowed him to play a lot of T20 games.
Kusal Perera | Sri Lanka captain: I'm trying to back myself and do my basics. I got a start, If I had batted till the 40th or 50th over, it'd have been great but things didn't go our way. He (Hasaranga) did a good job for the team with his bowling and batting. We got a partnership, but that didn't help. We have to get together and post a good total for our bowlers.
17:31 Local Time, 16:31 GMT, 22:01 IST: Bairstow started like a hurricane that wanted to destroy Sri Lanka quickly, even entertained thoughts of letting the supporters catch their national team's Euro knockout game against Germany but Sri Lanka fought back and they did so by picking wickets. Livingstone departed attempting a big shot and in the very next over Bairstow chopped one back on, Chameera then returned to nip out Morgan and Billings, he should have also had Moeen if not for the drop catch. England needed someone to just bat long and they had that readymade in Test skipper Joe Root, he saw the chase through with some good support from Moeen. The pair added 90+ for the fifth wicket to seal the deal and give them a 1-0 lead. Sri Lanka's bowlers fared better than their batters as they made England work hard for the runs, but in the end they were well short of a defendable total.
Binura Fernando to Sam Curran, FOUR, England win by 5 wickets. Some glove love between Curran and Root as the rest celebrate in the balcony. A comprehensive victory for the hosts. A juicy full toss from Fernando and Curran whips it away through mid-wicket, the ball raced across the turf
Binura Fernando to Root, 1 run, fuller delivery around off, Root wrists it to mid-on and races across for a quick single
Binura Fernando to Root, no run, 128kph yorker length delivery around off, Root squeezes it out to backward point
Binura Fernando to Sam Curran, 1 run, slower delivery outside off, Curran sees the width and slashes hard, the outside edge flies down to third man
Binura Fernando to Root, 1 run, angled in from round the wicket, Root works it past mid-wicket and takes England closer
