Breathtakingly competitive, fiercely flawed: this game of T20 cricket had Sri Lanka hoping more out of the impending ODI series, as much it has us hoping more out of de Villier's career. He returned with a bang, smacking 63 off 44 balls that sadly wasn't enough. Now to the ODI matches between these two teams - five of them in store. Should be good fun. For my co-commentator Sagar Chawla and scorer Venkatesh, this is Pratyush Sinha. Goodnight and ta-ta!

Chandimal talked with the trophy in his hands. Gets done with the presentation and calls his team up for a photograph. The intersection of all the poses would be something like: two hands up, mouth wide open and screaming. Good to see.

Dinesh Chandimal - captain, Sri Lanka: "Everyone was down after the Test series but we did well in all three games. Dickwella and Sandakan played well throughout the series. We won the second game, and we could repeat the performance in the third one too. Credit to the players, and to Angelo too; he's a big part of this team. The two army boys finished it very well. Looking forward to one-dayers."

Niroshan Dickwella - Man of the Match | Man of the Series: "It is my first series in South Africa. It was great playing here, in these conditions against a good side. I play my normal game in the first 6 overs and then try to bat till the 13th or 14th over. Not trying to hit hard is my strength. All three surfaces were good batting tracks, and in the end, I did my job for the team."

Farhaan Behardien - captain, South Africa: "I thought 170 was a good score. We had a good cameo in the end too. We wanted to do much better than we did with the bat at Wanderers. The dropped catches gave the batsmen the momentum. Proved costly in the end. Imran Tahir is a magnificent performer for South Africa. Tonight, he pulled out a special performance that sadly wasn't enough. To lose to a full house at Newlands is quite tough. We are off to PE tomorrow to prepare for the ODI series."

09:20pm local: Phew, Sri Lanka win. A target of 170 wasn't intimidating on a good track but those three sixes by Mangaliso Mosehle in the last over threatened to really conspire against a contest. Didn't. Niroshan Dickwella's maiden fifty carried them. And so did Seekkuge Prasanna's cameo of 37 off 16 balls to sail Sri Lanka through. South Africa dropped a lot of catches. Like a lot. There was a time when they dropped three off three consecutive balls - some tough, some not so much. So they can't blame anyone but themselves. A really good game in the end to end an amazing T20I series

19.5

Dane Paterson to Asela Gunaratne, 1 run, Gunaratne can celebrate now. He was a ball early, a run early, but squeezes a single through point and takes Sri Lanka to a 2-1 series win. Their first in South Africa and their first since the World T20 win in 2014. What a game

19.4

4

Dane Paterson to Asela Gunaratne, FOUR, he does a Bangladesh.. Gunaratne almost does a Bangladesh at Chinnaswamy here. Top-edges a pull over the keeper's head and starts celebrating. There's a match to be won, Gunaratne. There's a run to be scored, still. We live in a world where a run matters. Ask Bangladesh... Ask Randiv and Sehwag..

19.3

Dane Paterson to S Prasanna, 1 run, cleverly bowls a slower ball and Prasanna was always going to go hard. Pistols an inside edge on the pad and runs away, seeing the ball deflecting away. 5 off 3. If Sri Lanka lose from here..

19.2

Dane Paterson to Asela Gunaratne, 1 run, really goes hard at a full ball outside off and slaps it through covers. 6 off 4 needed, gee!

19.1

4

Dane Paterson to Asela Gunaratne, FOUR, and a boundary! Might have sealed it for Sri Lanka. Coils up on his front foot and paddle-sweeps this over short fine leg. As pretty as glorious, this shot. 7 needed off 5 balls

So, 11 needed off the last over. Told ya, this will be close..

18.6

Phehlukwayo to S Prasanna, FOUR, scooped away! Two dot balls in the build-up and it's been released with a low full toss. Prasanna reached out on his front foot and lobs it wide of the keeper. Races into the third man fence

18.5

Phehlukwayo to S Prasanna, no run, and another! Another yorker length delivery outside off, this time slightly slower, and Prasanna has missed it

18.4

Phehlukwayo to S Prasanna, no run, fails to squeeze out a full yorker outside off. Good ball

18.4

Phehlukwayo to S Prasanna, wide, and because 10 runs off 3 balls weren't enough, we have a wide from Phehlukwayo. Tries to choke Prasanna with an overdose of room outside off and ends up doling it out too wide

18.3

6

Phehlukwayo to S Prasanna, SIX, big. Very big. Picks the slower ball and since it was dropped short, Prasanna had the room and the time to biff it right over long-on. What do we have in store?

18.2

Phehlukwayo to Asela Gunaratne, 1 run, drags a swat to mid-wicket

18.1

Phehlukwayo to S Prasanna, 3 runs, through point's dive there. Just enough room there to execute the cut shot.. and.. they are going for the third. Tahir throws to the keeper, who sharply collects it from in front of the stumps and parries it at the other end. Misses and there's a thumbs-up exchanged between the batsmen. They did what they wanted to. Three runs

Andile Phehlukwayo [3.0-0-17-0] is back into the attack
