That wraps things up for the opening Ashes Test. The next one is a day-night affair in Adelaide starting on the 16th. We will be there as usual. That's it from us for this one. Do join us for more cricket and check out all the reviews and analysis from Bharat Sundaresan - our correspondent in Brisbane as he dissects the effects of Australia going 1-0 up on these pages. Until next time, take care and be well. Stay safe. Goodbye.

Travis Head: The staff, Pat [Cummins] and JL [Justin Langer] were fantastic with the communication, gave me real clarity and a clear mind and great to get the nod and great to contribute. It is a great starting point for us as a team. Davey-Marnus partnership that set me up, late in the day to take my opportunity. It was a tough wicket, rode my luck, took my opportunities and it was nice to contribute and this morning was fantastic. The whole moment, the crowd and the emotion of Test cricket - you ride that wave, I was going quite hard and there was plenty of emotion there and riding that with Starcy [Starc] was fantastic. He came back beautifully, yesterday he would've been disappointed not to have the results he would've liked but he stayed tough and hung in there. We knew the rewards were around the corner, everything he gets, he deserves. He is an excellent worker, excellent team-man. Fantastic to see him get the results he did and come back really strong for us this morning [on Nathan Lyon]. I will enjoy this and can't wait to get home, one of the great weeks in Adelaide, I'm sure it will be sold out and can't wait to get there.

Travis Head is the Player of the Match for his 152.

Pat Cummins | Australia captain: Really enjoyed it, lot of things did go right probably from the toss, overcast conditions, wicket had a bit in it and to turn up on day 2 - under blue skies, someone's smiling over me. Really proud of everyone. A really complete performance, the bowlers did everything on day 1 and Marnus-Davey with a big partnership and the way Travis played, it is a sign of a really positive group. I was happy everyone stuck to it - we bowled without much luck yesterday, fair with all the luck on day 1. That's why we want him in the side, he can take the game away in a couple of hours, we have seen him do it for South Australia. He averages 45 now, he is still young but is an old pro with the amount of first-class cricket he has played and hopefully he is away now [on Travis Head]. He was a little bit sore yesterday, with a five-match Test series, did not want to try and break him yesterday and he pulled up OK today [on Hazlewood]. When I had 20 to go, we couldn't find him [smiles], we looked everywhere in the stadium. He is fine, we did not want to risk him and he will be alright for Adelaide [on David Warner].

Joe Root | England captain: Frustration I think, we worked really hard to get back in the game last night and we knew that if we got through the new-ball unscathed and carried that partnership forward, we would really give ourselves a good opportunity to go on and post some sort of total which would've kept us in the game. We saw how the pitch develop throughout the day, it's a bit more uneven, still has sideways movement, the cracks are appearing. It's a shame we couldn't get through that initial phase, because it could've been very different. It is easy to look back in hindsight - one thing I will say is we wanted variation in our attack, we wanted to change the pace of the game and move through different gears throughout the innings [on team selection]. If we are being honest, we can't create as many chances as we did and put them down. Our bowlers were excellent. We have got to be better in the field and with the bat. 40/4 is not a position to start a Test series, we know where we need to get better but I do think the way we responded in the second innings showed a great amount of character and fight. If anything it falls on me for giving him too aggressive fields too early, not allowing him to settle and give him a bit more of a chance early on [on Jack Leach]. Jack is a fine spinner, in the 20-odd Tests he has played, he has shown what an instrumental part he can play within this team and I'm sure he will play a big part in the series moving forward. It's really important in a five-match Test series, we don't feel too sorry for ourselves on the back of this. We have got to remember there is a huge amount of cricket to play. There are a lot of good things to take from this game, we felt we were very much in the game for long periods of time. We were on the wrong side of the weather breaks and with the two-and-a-half-hour sessions on the second morning made it quite difficult to keep the bowlers fresh but these things happen, you got to learn and become stronger for it and that's exactly what we will do for the rest of the series.

Few positives for England too. The batting of Malan and Root and the bowling of Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson. But as has been the case with them in recent times, they tend to have match-losing collapses in a short span of time which is what happened again today morning. But questions will be asked of Root and his team selections especially not picking Anderson or Broad with both of them fit. But the way they showed character in the second innings with the bat should warm their hearts and keep their hopes upbeat for the upcoming matches. The presentation isn't far away. Do stay tuned.

When day 4 started England were just 58 behind but it all came apart after Lyon took his 400th Test wicket after waiting for 11 months on 399. Root fell in the next over - he is still waiting for his 1st Test ton in Australia. Then the new-ball completed the job. England though managed to avoid the innings defeat but the 20 runs were knocked off with the loss of Alex Carey. Lots of positives for Australia with the debut of Carey who was superb with his glovework and took 8 catches - the most for a debutant. Head who fought with Khawaja for the No.5 spot, cemented it with an authoritative innings and the bowlers all chipped in with Lyon coming to the party in the 2nd innings with a four-fer. Even though Warner did not come out to bat with a bruised rib, he should be alright for Adelaide.

13:10 Local Time, 03:10 GMT, 08:40 IST: Australia make The Gabba their fortress again - at least against someone not named India. The opening Ashes Test is done inside four days and a great start for Pat Cummins as Test skipper. The game was lost on the opening day when England crumbled to 147 on a green seamer. The decision to bat first backfired for Joe Root who went in without Broad and Anderson for the game. The Aussies were superb with the ball and let the pitch do the rest with all three seamers combining beautifully. In reply, the innings revolved around two men - David Warner and Travis Head. The latter got his hundred off 85 balls and finished with 152. The last 5 wickets added 230 runs for Australia which was massive and gave the hosts a 278-run lead. England then fought back well on day 3 with Root and Malan digging in.

Mark Wood to Marcus Harris, FOUR, one ball from Mark Wood is enough for Australia to go 1-0 up. Full and wide outside off, square-driven to the fence and Marcus Harris fist-pumps in delight. A clinical win and that's the game done
