Like Zimbabwe skipper Hamilton Masakadza said at the post match interview, 50-60 runs more and you would never know, things could've been different. Nonetheless, the end result is what matters and South Africa will be relieved to go 1-0 up in the series. Time to pull the shutters down for today. Join us back for the second ODI on Wednesday (October 3). Until then, goodbye from here.
JPD: Definitlely more than expected. There was always something in it for the bowlers. It was a tough total to chase down even though we bowled well. Kind of self-explanatory the way it played (the wicket). Credit to the bowlers; they stuck to their plans and executed well. Very different wicket compared to the usual Kimberly wicket. We tried to be aggressive. didn't execute but all in all, happy with the win. It's a conscious game plan that we are trying to adopt (about the aggressive style of batting). You want to get the first win under the belt in a short series and we will take confidence into Bloemfontein.
Lungi, Man of the Match: Lot spicier than we thought (the wicket). Happy to continue the good form. Lot of confidence coming from Sri Lanka. Looking forward to the rest of the games. Attacking the stumps was one thing that could come into play as the ball was nipping a bit. Keeping it simple, hitting your length and the wicket did the rest. He (Rabada) told me upfront, (bowl with the wind). After the first ball, I thought the wind was stronger and I adjusted to it later. Very happy, want to keep putting my hand up, you never want to be left out of selection. It's a lovely challenge and just looking to keep the good form going and try to be as consistent as possible.
Masakadza: We were a bit surprised with the way wicket played, in the morning we felt that it would do a bit in the first few overs. Turned out to be more than we thought. We didn't do enough with the bat, maybe 50-60 runs more would've been competitive and little better for us. Thought we started well with the ball, but lost it towards the end. Get a few more on the board and see how we go from there.
15:06 Local Time: Collective smiles and a sense of relief in the South African dressing room. It wasn't a canter by any means. The hosts were made to earn every run as the Zimbabwen bowlers made a good fist out a paltry total. Only if their batsmen had showed some steel. Anyway, South African batsmen were pretty eager to knock off the runs from the start and rush of adrenaline saw them stutter at 40/3. Chatara was exceptional in his first spell, complemented well by Jarvis. Panic mode was on, but Heinrich Klaasen and Jean-Paul Duminy doused off any hopes for the visitors, scraping home in the end with 5 wickets. Presentations to follow..
Sean Williams to Willem Mulder, FOUR, bit of an anticlimactic finish in the end for South Africa. Freebie from Williams, spills it down leg and Mulder gets a faint tickle to send it away to the fine leg fence. The Proteas take 1-0 lead in the 3-match series

Brandon Mavuta to Duminy, FOUR, phew, finally the sweep shot comes off for Duminy. This was slightly down leg, Duminy sat low and rolled his wrists to control it very fine
Brandon Mavuta to Willem Mulder, 1 run, turned with the spin to square leg
Brandon Mavuta to Willem Mulder, no run, this was the googly, almost flummoxed Mulder as he was caught playing for the leg-break. Opened him up like a bottle of can and a leading edge was found which spooned towards point
Brandon Mavuta to Willem Mulder, no run, loads it up with flight, dead-batted under his nose
Brandon Mavuta to Duminy, 1 run, quicker on leg, flicked away to deep mid-wicket
Brandon Mavuta to Duminy, no run, 85kph, delicious leggie. Duminy presents a straight bat in defence

4-0-15-0
Sean Williams to Willem Mulder, no run, quicker, arrowing in with the arm. Defended off the back foot
Sean Williams to Willem Mulder, 2 runs, flatter trajectory outside off, Mulder was making room and ends up cutting it to the left of sweeper cover, who had to cover some ground and makes a sliding stop. They take the second run comfortably
Sean Williams to Duminy, 1 run, Duminy chips down the track and bunts it away to long-on
Sean Williams to Willem Mulder, 1 run, 87kph darter on leg, tickled through square leg
Ayush: "My concern about Markram is that he started to shuffle today whereas he normally stays still. I hope that trying to do well in one day cricket doesn't cost him his Test match batting."
Sean Williams to Willem Mulder, no run, drifting on leg, shaved with a lowered stance to mid-wicket
Sean Williams to Willem Mulder, no run, tossed up accurately at the stumps, front foot block from Mulder
